New thiol-functionalized carboxylate ionic liquids (ILs), varying both for the cation and for the anion structures, have been prepared as new potential redox switching systems by reacting either 3-mercapto propionic acid (3-MPA) or N-acetyl-cysteine (NAC) with commercially available methyl carbonate ILs. Different ratios of thiol/disulfide ILs were obtained depending both on the acid employed in the neutralization reaction and on the reaction conditions used. Surprisingly, the imidazolium ILs di...

The ever-increasing interest in the Suzuki–Miyaura cross-coupling reaction (SMR) and its applications, with more than 40 years of history, has increased exponentially in the last decade, which speaks volumes about its efficiency and effectiveness. This widely used powerful method provides a practical synthetic route for the direct formation of carbon–carbon bonds, which has found considerable academic and industrial use for the production of polymers, fine chemicals and materials, in addition to...

Matrix metalloproteinase-12 (MMP-12) selective inhibitors could play a role in the treatment of lung inflammatory and cardiovascular diseases. In the present study, the previously reported 4-methoxybiphenylsulfonyl hydroxamate and carboxylate based inhibitors (1b and 2b) were modified to enhance their selectivity for MMP-12. In the newly synthesized thioaryl derivatives, the nature of the zinc binding group (ZBG) and the sulfur oxidation state were changed. Biological assays carried out in vitro...

Ionic liquids (ILs) can behave as the green solvents compared to conventional organic solvents, but more often they act as ligands, co-catalysts, and stabilizing agents for both the metal active species and intermediates of the catalytic system. In this review we mainly summarized the recent achievements (2013 to the present) in Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction in ILs for the assembly of structurally diverse and highly functionalized organic molecules, with focus on nucleopalladation trigger...

Sustainable solvents are a topic of growing interest in both the research community and the chemical industry due to a growing awareness of the impact of solvents on pollution, energy usage, and contributions to air quality and climate change. Solvent losses represent a major portion of organic pollution, and solvent removal represents a large proportion of process energy consumption. To counter these issues, a range of greener or more sustainable solvents have been proposed and developed over t...

The quest for sustainable processes is becoming more and more important, with catalysis playing a major role in improving atom economy and reducing waste. Organic syntheses with less need of protecting/de-protecting steps are highly desirable. The combination of microwave irradiation, as energy source, with ionic liquids, as both solvents and catalysts, offered interesting solutions in recent years. The literature data of the last 15 years concerning selected reactions are presented, highlightin...

Ionic liquids (ILs) are considered a promising class of potentially environmentally friendly solvents for use in a variety of applications. However, they are generally synthesized by batch in nonsustainable solvents. ILs to be really “green” compounds for widespread use should be also synthesized in a benign manner. Here, we report an unconventional procedure to prepare [Bmim]Cl, as a typical IL, using the same product as solvent. This approach guarantees a high reaction rate assuring at the sam...

Cu-catalysed arylation reactions devoted to the formation of C–C and C–heteroatom bonds (Ullmann-type couplings) have acquired great importance in the last decade. This review discusses the history and development of coupling reactions between aryl halides and various classes of nucleophiles, focusing mostly on the different mechanisms proposed through the years. Selected mechanistic investigations are treated more in depth than others. For example, evidence in favour or against radical mechanis...

Abstract Suzuki–Miyaura cross coupling reactions of aryl halides with aryl boronic acids were carried out in basic ionic liquids in the presence of lithium chloride as a promoter. The coupling reactions, carried out in the absence of base and ligand, proceed in good to excellent yields with easy product isolation and catalyst recycle.

Abstract 1-Glycyl-3-methyl imidazolium chloride–palladium(II) complex [[Gmim]Cl–Pd(II)] was found to be a catalyst for the Suzuki–Miyaura reaction with excellent yields with high turnover number (6.5 × 102–9.4 × 102).
