On May 21, 2019 at 03:02:29 UTC Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo observed a short duration gravitational-wave signal, GW190521, with a three-detector network signal-to-noise ratio of 14.7, and an estimated false-alarm rate of 1 in 4900 yr using a search sensitive to generic transients. If GW190521 is from a quasicircular binary inspiral, then the detected signal is consistent with the merger of two black holes with masses of <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><a:mrow><a:mrow><a:mn>8</a:mn><a:msubsup><a:mrow><a:mn>5</a:mn></a:mrow><a:mrow><a:mo>−</a:mo><a:mn>14</a:mn></a:mrow><a:mrow><a:mo>+</a:mo><a:mn>21</a:mn></a:mrow></a:msubsup></a:mrow><a:mtext> </a:mtext><a:mtext> </a:mtext><a:msub><a:mrow><a:mi>M</a:mi></a:mrow><a:mrow><a:mo stretchy="false">⊙</a:mo></a:mrow></a:msub></a:mrow></a:math> and <d:math xmlns:d="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><d:mrow><d:mrow><d:mn>6</d:mn><d:msubsup><d:mrow><d:mn>6</d:mn></d:mrow><d:mrow><d:mo>−</d:mo><d:mn>18</d:mn></d:mrow><d:mrow><d:mo>+</d:mo><d:mn>17</d:mn></d:mrow></d:msubsup></d:mrow><d:mtext> </d:mtext><d:mtext> </d:mtext><d:msub><d:mrow><d:mi>M</d:mi></d:mrow><d:mrow><d:mo stretchy="false">⊙</d:mo></d:mrow></d:msub></d:mrow></d:math> (90% credible intervals). We infer that the primary black hole mass lies within the gap produced by (pulsational) pair-instability supernova processes, with only a 0.32% probability of being below <g:math xmlns:g="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><g:mn>65</g:mn><g:mtext> </g:mtext><g:mtext> </g:mtext><g:msub><g:mi>M</g:mi><g:mo stretchy="false">⊙</g:mo></g:msub></g:math>.
