The necessity to produce modern composites with an acceptable impact resistance is an essential task in automobile and aerospace industry that needs to be satisfied. This capability is addressed by noteworthy energy absorption augmentation which is the most vital characteristic of such composite materials. In this paper, nanofibers are applied as interleaves to modify the delamination strength with a minimum rise in weight and thickness of the high-modulus polypropylene/epoxy composites. Nylon 6,6 nanofibers are produced by the electrospinning method. The distribution of nanofibers across the mats is examined by SEM. Innegra fabrics have been applied in composite layers production. The proper hand lay-up manufacturing of the laminates has been assured by the assistance of a hydraulic press. The energy absorption capacity at the onset of breakdown and impact resistance of the nanomodified and non-modified laminates were determined by quasi-static three-point flexural for the former and low-velocity impact tests for the latter. The obtained results were compared. The results showed a 6.2 and 16.9% increase in the energy absorption capacity of nanomodified laminates in quasi-static three-point flexural test and low-velocity impact tests, respectively. In addition, low-velocity impact tests revealed 16 and 26% improvement in maximum load capacity.

Surface of Al2O3 nanoparticles was modified with a silane coupling agent, and aramid fiber-reinforced epoxy nanocomposites were produced using these particles. Three different types of laminated nanocomposites were produced. These nanocomposites were obtained by adding modified nanoparticles to the epoxy resin and the aramid fiber, each separately, and to both epoxy resin and aramid fiber. All nanocomposites were produced by vacuum-assisted resin infusion method. The surface-modified Al2O3 nanop...

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) is established as an organic solid鈥搇iquid phase-change material (PCM) offering a wide range of enthalpies and phase transition temperatures as a function of its molecular weight. PCMs are known for their high-energy absorbance; however, they also have two main drawbacks of leakage and enthalpy reduction during melting. In this work, polyethylene glycol as a phase-change material and graphene oxide (GO), expanded graphene (EG), and epoxy resin (EP) as shape stabilizing m...

The purpose of this study is to make use of the advantages of both polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) to fabricate a flexible electronic device. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)/polyacrylonitrile (PAN) composite fibrous mats with different blend ratios were fabricated using electrospinning. The effects of PVDF and PAN mass ratio on fiber morphology, chemical structure, thermal stability, and piezoelectric properties of the produced composite fibers were investigated by scan...

The most important application of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) polymer in industry is its use as a solid lubricant, due to its lack of reactivity with most industrial materials. However, the PTFE polymer has low abrasive resistance that limited its usage. In this research, 0, 2, and 5% of nanoclay were added to PTFE polymer as filler, and properties of the resultant nanocomposites were investigated. For this purpose, the nanoclay was first dissolved in a solution of water and surfactant, and t...

Cured shape of cross-ply [02/902]T fiber-reinforced composite laminates and the effect of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) on the mechanical and thermal properties of laminates have been investigated. The nanocomposite laminate used in this study is composed of three phases: carbon fiber, polymer matrix and MWCNT. The volume fractions of 0%, 1%, 2% and 3% MWCNT were used to prepare nanocomposites. The mechanical and thermal properties of nanocomposites and fiber-reinforced nanocomposite lami...

Abstract Nowadays, many components are made of composite laminates assembly by bolted or riveted joints. Thus, the drilling of laminates is a usual machining operation in many industries. Due to the stress concentration around the hole, different damage modes can occur during the service. In this study, the effect of interleaving Nylon 66 nanofibers between glass/epoxy laminate on decreasing damage under the three-point bending test is considered. The results showed that applying nanofibers caus...

Abstract In the last few decades nanofibers have been developed and introduced in a vast number of industrial and research applications. One of their most effective use is as interleaved reinforcement for composite laminate materials against delamination. Nanofibrous mats have the ideal morphology to be embedded between two plies of a laminate, and a vast and deep research has been carried out investigating their effect on the global behaviour of a composite laminate. This review is the first of...

An experimental study was performed on low-velocity impact response of nanocomposite beams reinforced with different loadings of nanoclay (0, 3, 5 or 7 wt%). Using two commercially organo-modified nanoclays (Cloisite 30B and Cloisite 15A), as well as two types of manufacturing methods (hand lay-up and vacuum assisted resin transfer molding), a set of composite/nanocomposite beam samples was prepared. To apply identical boundary conditions along the width of the beam, a cylindrical impactor was s...

This study investigates morphological and mechanical behaviors of polymer composite plates reinforced with surface modified glass fiber woven roving with special interest in high velocity impact response. Four types of surface modification were applied to the glass fiber surface, namely: virgin fabric (silane coupling agent removed), silane-treated (as received fabric), corona-treated virgin fabric and silane- plus corona-treated fabric. Hand layup technique was adopted to make composite plates ...

The principal intention of this work is to fabricate and characterize the polyamide/chitosan nanocomposite by a novel single solvent method through the electrospinning procedure. The thermal properties and morphology of prepared nanocomposite are studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). TGA exposed that the primary decomposition temperature is reduced with rising of chitosan content in the nanocomposites and origin disintegration tempe...
