Abstract
The vital need for an external dehydrating agent in high-yield production of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) has been circumvented viain situ formation of copper sulfide (Cu2S) bonded 2D-sulfonated organic polymers, Cu-SOPm and Cu-SOPs, by deploying a single-step and solvent-assisted mechanochemical and solvothermal methods, respectively. Cu-SOPm exhibited excellent catalytic activity for the continuous production of DMC from carbon dioxide and methanol without using a dehydrating agent. The presence of higher amount of sulfonic acid groups (-SO3H), is the key factor, which can adsorb the ensuing water during the reaction thus shifting reaction equilibrium in the forward direction; Cu-SOPs is relatively less active catalytically owing to lesser amount of sulfonic groups. All the reactions are accomplished on a high-pressure fixed-bed flow reactor and the effect of various reaction parameters (flow rate, catalyst amount, system temperature and pressure) are investigated, especially the preheating of CO2 and CH3OH mixture, which facilitated methanol conversion considerably, and afforded 42.8% yield of DMC with 100% selectivity. The preparation of the catalysts and formation of DMC was supported by plausible mechanism wherein increased residence time and high reaction pressure always favored the methanol conversion. The study enables the continuous high-yield generation of DMC under flow conditions deploying preheating of substrates and concomitantly addressing the lingering problem to design a built-in dehydrating capability in the catalyst.

Abstract Greenhouse effect raised by the carbon dioxide emissions has become a pivotal resolved issue at present. The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and methanol is one of infusive green pathways. In this study, a novel CuNi alloy nanoparticles encapsulated in a thermal stable triphenylphosphine porous organic polymers (POP-PPh3), CuxNiy@POP-PPh3 catalysts, is synthesized and then explored in the direct DMC synthesis reactions. The CuxNiy@POP-PPh3 catalysts are fully chara...

Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) is widely employed as a versatile reagent and solvent for green organic synthesis and fuel additives. Owing to the environmental issues of the traditional methods for DMC production, the direct synthesis of DMC from carbon dioxide and methanol has received significant interest worldwide. Here, we demonstrate the catalytic effectiveness of monolithic titanium-doped cerium oxides, TixCe1−xO2 nanocomposites, for the direct synthesis of DMC. The TixCe1−xO2 nanocomposites are...

The morphology-dependent catalytic performance of various supported metal nanocatalysts (Au, Pd, Pt, Co, Cu and Ru) deposited on oxide supports (cerium oxide and zinc oxide) with varying morphologies are discussed. The support morphology-dependent activity for important industrial reactions such as carbon monoxide oxidation, ammonia synthesis, the water–gas shift reaction, methanol steam reforming, and so forth is discerned. The nanoscale synthesis of metal nanoparticles and their deposition on ...

: Single-atom catalysts (SACs) aim at bridging the gap between homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. The challenge is the development of materials with ligands enabling coordination of metal atoms in different valence states, and preventing leaching or nanoparticle formation. Graphene functionalized with nitrile groups (cyanographene) is herein employed for the robust coordination of Cu(II) ions, which are partially reduced to Cu(I) due to graphene-induced charge transfer. Inspired by nature'...

Abstract The effect of copper as dopant on ceria (CeO2) was investigated in the direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and methanol. Ceria with different copper loadings (0.02 and 0.5 wt%) was synthesized using the dry impregnation method and characterized by H2-TPR, XRD, EPR, UV–VIS/DRS, acid-base properties and N2 physisorption. CeO2 with 0.02 wt% of Cu showed the highest catalytic activity and selectivity to DMC, mostly due to its basic sites, associated with the presence of ox...

The world’s first non-phosgene polycarbonate process from CO2 has been developed and industrialized by Asahi Kasei Corporation (Japan). Hitherto, all polycarbonates (PCs) have been produced using CO as a raw material. Among them, most PCs have been produced by so-called the “phosgene process” using highly toxic phosgene (COCl2) and large amounts of solvents (probable human carcinogen CH2Cl2 and water). The phosgene process has many environmental and safety problems. However, technological barrie...

Abstract Diaryl selenide is the main drug candidate today. An efficient, easy and ligand free cross-coupling reaction of aryl halide and diaryl diselenide was carried out by as-prepared copper sulfide functionalized carbon (Cu2S@C) catalyst. Cu2S@C catalyst was developed using novel tri-cationic ionic liquid (IL) as a precursor and sulfur source. Catalyst found to having rich content of heteroatoms (S and N) by EDX and Elemental mapping characterization techniques. Effective utilization of catal...

Abstract Dimethyl carbonate (DMC, (CH3O)2CO), as an important and environmentally friendly chemical intermediate, has been widely used in industrial fields. Several large-scale industrial routes of DMC production, e.g., phosgene route, transesterification route, and the liquid-phase oxidative carbonylation of methanol, have been developed to date. Nevertheless, these industrial routes suffer from different drawbacks, such as the use of hypertoxic phosgene as raw material, high production cost, a...

The synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and methanol by Zr-doped CeO2 nanorods with different ratios of Zr/Ce has been studied at 6.8 MPa and 140 °C. The catalysts were characterized extensively by TEM, XRD, N2 adsorption, Raman spectroscopy, UV–vis spectroscopy, XPS, CO2-TPD, and in situ FTIR techniques. Doping of Zr atoms into the ceria lattice produced a fluorite-like solid solution, promoting the formation of oxygen vacancy sites. Zr-doped CeO2 nanorods exhibited significantly mor...

Abstract null null The capture and conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) into useful and valuable chemicals are receiving more and more research interesting. Herein, we designed a new and efficient route to synthesize methyl phenyl carbonate (MPC) via the carbonylation of phenol (PhOH) with CO2 and methanol (CH3OH). PhOH and CH3OH react with 1,8-diazabicyclo-[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU) to form ionic liquids [DBUH][PhO] and [DBUH][CH3O]. The DBU-based ionic liquids exhibited outstanding performance in ...

Polymer synthesis with CO2 as a C1 chemical has attracted much attention from the viewpoint of green chemistry. The direct transformation of CO2 and diols into polycarbonate diols is promising as an alternative method to the hazardous phosgene process, however, challenging due to the inert characteristic of CO2 and thermodynamic limitation. Herein, we present the direct synthesis of polycarbonate diols from atmospheric pressure CO2 and α,ω-diols using a heterogeneous CeO2 catalyst and a CO2 flow...
