Abstract In this study, the polyacrylamide-gelatin composite hydrogels reinforced by halloysite nanotubes@polydopamine (HNTs@PDA) with NIR triggered shape memory performance and self-healing capacity were prepared through in-situ free radical polymerization of acrylamide in the mixture of Laponite-RD, HNTs@PDA and gelatin. HNTs@PDA was firstly synthesized through oxidative polymerization of dopamine on the surfaces of HNTs. HNTs@PDA was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, Zeta potential, particle size analysis, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The photothermal performance of HNTs@PDA was then determined and the results reveal that HNTs@PDA can be employed as a superior photothermal agent to prepare light responsive hydrogels. The structure, morphology, mechanical properties, NIR triggered shape memory performance and self-healing capacity of the composite hydrogels were studied. The modified nanotubes act as cross-linking agent of polyacrylamide to form a rigid network in the hydrogel matrix, which leads to a significant increase in the mechanical properties. Moreover, the NIR triggered shape recovery process of the hydrogel is quite rapid, for example, it is only 63 s for recovering 720° shape change for the hydrogel of HNTs@PDA 40. The maximum NIR triggered healing efficiency of the hydrogels can reach 76%. The HNTs@PDA reinforced hydrogels with superior mechanical properties, NIR triggered shape memory, and self-healing ability exhibit promising applications in biomedical materials and smart engineering materials.

Abstract Bioactive bovine skin gelatin (BSG)/zinc oxide (ZnO)/clove essential oil (CEO) nanocomposites films were fabricated by a solution-cast. The suitable combinations of ZnO (2 wt%) and CEO (25 wt%) improve the desirable film properties, namely, elongation at break (EAB), optical, structural, thermal, barrier and microbiological properties. XRD confirmed the presence of ZnO in the gelatin-composites and the highest thermal stability of the composites was evident by the TGA thermograms. Curre...

Abstract A high-strength nanocomposite hydrogel composed with polyacrylamide (PAAm) is fabricated via in-situ free radical polymerization of acrylamide in presence of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) and then by ethanol immersing. HNTs act as physical cross-linkers for PAAm chains via hydrogen bonding interactions, while ethanol makes the crosslinking network denser by release of water. The mechanical properties of hydrogels are significantly increased by addition of HNTs and ethanol treatment. The s...

Abstract We present here preparation of mechanically strong and biocompatible cryogel composites based on hyaluronic acid (HA) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) of various compositions, and their applications as scaffold for different cell growing media. Uniaxial compression tests reveal that the incorporation of HNTs into HA cryogels leads to a ~2.5-fold increase in their Young moduli, e.g., from 38 ± 1 to 99 ± 4 kPa at a HA:HNTs weight ratio of 1:2. Although HA:HNTs based cryogels were found to ...

Abstract Three-dimensional (3D) printed polymer scaffolds can build engineered tissue constructs with complex and hierarchical structures, mechanical and biological heterogeneity. However, the interactions between the scaffolds and cells should be optimally designed for their practical application. In this work, 3D printed polylactic acid (PLA) pattern was functionalized by a polydopamine (PDA) interlayer to firmly bond the halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) on the surfaces of the PLA pattern for guidi...

Gold nanorods (GNRs) and doxorubicin (DOX) were loaded into the lumen of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) via a rapid synthesis process (2 min) and physical adsorption. The targeting molecules of folic acid (FA) are then conjugated to HNTs via reactions with bovine serum albumin (BSA). The formation of GNRs in HNTs was verified by different techniques. Au-HNT-DOX@BSA-FA shows a maximum temperature of 26.8 °C rising after 8 min of 808 nm laser irradiation under 0.8 W cm–2. The functionalized HNTs exhi...

While most hair care formulations are developed on the basis of surfactants or polymers, we introduce self-assembly coating of micro and nano-particles as the underlying principle for hair modification, protection and enhancement. Halloysite clay nanotubes formed by rolled sheets of aluminosilicate kaolin assemble on the surface of hair forming a robust multilayer coverage. Prior to the application, clay nanotubes were loaded with selected dyes or drug allowing for hair coloring or medical treat...

: As a novel 2D material, black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets are considered as a promising candidate for drug delivery platform for synergistic chemo/photothermal therapy. However, the intrinsic instability of bare BP poses a challenge in its biomedical applications. To date, some strategies have been employed to prevent BP from rapid ambient degradation. Unfortunately, most of these strategies are not suitable for the drug delivery systems. Here, a simple polydopamine modification method is devel...

Abstract In this work, the halloysite nanotubes@carbon (HNTs@C) nanocomposites are synthesized by one-step hydrothermal carbonization of glucose on the surface of HNTs. HNTs can effectively induce heterogeneous deposition of carbonaceous materials on their surfaces, which leads to a layer of amorphous carbon around HNTs. The HNTs@C was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectr...

An easy strategy to obtain nanohydrogels within the halloysite nanotube (HNTs) lumen was investigated. Inorganic reverse micelles based on HNTs and hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromides were dispersed in chloroform, and the hydrophilic cavity was used as a nanoreactor to confine the gel formation based on alginate cross-linked by calcium ions. Spectroscopy and electron microscopy experiments proved the confinement of the polymer into the HNT lumen and the formation of calcium-mediated networks. Bi...

Abstract Self-healing conductive hydrogels create an important class of smart skin materials with robust mechanical properties and sensitivity. Yet, these reported hydrogels cannot function steadily or be widely used because of expensive cost, complex synthetic process and weak stability. Reported here is a novel interpenetrating network hydrogel based on an all-natural strategy with carboxymethyl cellulose and dopamine as raw materials. The interpenetrating network was constructed via a facile ...

Abstract In this study, a single-layered Ti3C2 hybrid SiO2 filler (Ti3C2-h-SiO2) was proposed to fabricate high-performance styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) elastomer composites. It was found that incorporating SiO2 not only facilitated the uniform dispersion of Ti3C2-h-SiO2 in the SBR matrix but also endowed the surface of Ti3C2-h-SiO2 with nano protuberances for immobilizing more rubber chains, resulting in the improvement of the interfacial interaction between Ti3C2-h-SiO2 and SBR matrix. Thus,...
