Abstract
Abstract Chitosan (CS) based self-assembled nanohydrogels are considered as promising platform for biomedicine, petrochemical, agricultural and food applications due to their unique biodegradability, nano-interface effect, and intelligent responsiveness. However, the most CS derivatives are prepared in heterogeneous system, which is unstable and environmentally unfriendly. In this work, a series of hydroxybutyl chitosan (HBC) was synthesized based on a green and homogeneous system (potassium hydroxide (KOH)/urea), which given this derivative interesting temperature responsive phase transformation behavior. HBC could change from dissolved state into nanohydrogel state in deionized water, when the temperature exceed its critical phase change temperature, and this process could be repeated more than 50 cycles (one cycle/day) without coagulation. The nanohydrogels solution exhibited concentration and temperature-dependent ultraviolet absorption and visible light regulation, which had great application potential in smart windows. This study provided a novel preparation method and extended the application of chitosan-based temperature responsive self-assembled nanohydrogels.

Abstract A series of hydroxybutyl chitosans (HBCSs) with a degree of substitution (DS) ranging from 0.38 to 1.54 were homogeneously synthesized in KOH/LiOH/urea aqueous solutions under ambient conditions. The structure and solution properties of HBCSs were characterized by FT-IR, NMR, SEC-LLS, UV–vis, rheological and DLS measurements. The amino groups at C2 and hydroxyl groups at C3 and C6 participated in the reaction, although substitution mainly occurred at the hydroxyl groups at C6. The HBCSs...

Abstract Cell therapy with bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) is a potential method for many disease treatments, including keloid. In the present study, an Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) modified hydroxybutyl chitosan (HBC) hydrogel (HBC-RGD) was developed to enhance the adhesion and proliferation of BMSCs within the hydrogel. The successful synthesis of HBC-RGD was confirmed by FTIR and 1H NMR. Both HBC and HBC-RGD hydrogel had desired thermosensitivity, biocompatibility and enzymatic degrad...

Aerogels of polysaccharide with chelating functions can be useful as supports in many applications because of their hosting property. We demonstrate a facile method for the preparation of aerogels of chitosan derivative, “ureido‐chitin” containing ureido functional group. The nanofibrillar networks of “ureido‐chitin” were produced by the nucleophilic addition of amine groups of chitosan with in situ prepared isocyanic acid. The presence of ureido functional groups was confirmed by FT‐IR, solid s...

Abstract The novel solvent (0.25 M KOH/0.01 M urea alkaline solution) was used to successfully dissolve chitosan without freezing-thawing cycles, for the first time. The results from XRD, FTIR, and 13CNRM proved that KOH/urea solution could destroy the hydrogen bonds between chitosan chains more efficiently than NaOH/urea solution. The dynamic light scattering, rheology, viscosity and elemental analysis confirmed that the KOH/urea hydrogen-bonded chitosan complex had a better thermal stability a...

Tuning hydrogel degradation enables effective and successful tissue regeneration by modulating cellular behaviors and matrix formation. In this work, we develop a novel degradable hydrogel scaffold on the basis of a unique enzyme–substrate complex by photocrosslinking. Chitosan and lysozyme are chemically modified with methacrylate moieties to be tethered in hydrogels, and in the presence of riboflavin initiator, these hydrogels are cured by blue light irradiation. The incorporation of lysozyme ...

: Large-sized carbon spheres with controllable interior architecture are highly desired, but there is no method to synthesize these materials. Here, we develop a novel method to synthesize interior-structured mesoporous carbon microspheres (MCMs), based on the surfactant assembly within water droplet-confined spaces. Our approach is shown to access a library of unprecedented MCMs such as hollow MCMs, multi-chambered MCMs, bijel-structured MCMs, multi-cored MCMs, "solid" MCMs, and honeycombed MCM...

: Bacterial infection has always been a great threat to public health, and new antimicrobials to combat it are urgently needed. Here, a series of quaternized β-chitin derivatives is prepared simply and homogeneously in an aqueous KOH/urea solution, which is a high-efficiency, energy-saving, and "green" route for the modification of chitin. The mild reaction conditions keep the acetamido groups of β-chitin intact and introduce quaternary ammonium groups on the primary hydroxyl at the C-6 position...

One of the major challenges in vaccine design has been the over dependence on incorporation of abundant adjuvants, which in fact is in violation of the “minimalist” principle. In the present study, a compact nanovaccine derived from a near whole antigen (up to 97 wt %) was developed. The nanovaccine structure was stabilized by free cysteines within each antigen (ovalbumin, OVA), which were tempospatially exposed and heat-driven to form an extensive intermolecular disulfide network. This process ...

Abstract null null Chitosan (CTS) and 1,3,5-triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC) were gradiently cross-linked on the polyethersulfone ultrafiltration membrane (PES) to prepare a new type of positively charged composite nanofiltration membrane. The influence of preparing conditions on the membrane performance, such as permeability, mechanical strength, membrane morphology, and nanostructures was systematically discussed. The rejection performance to MgCl2, Na2SO4, MgSO4, and NaCl revealed that the pre...

Abstract Chitin, the nitrogen-containing polysaccharide in nature and reserves second only to cellulose, has demonstrated potential application value in multiple fields. However, under the background of various environmental problems caused by the excessive use of petroleum-based polymers, the utilization rate of this eco-friendly and renewable natural polymer is far from reaching a reasonable level. Therefore, researches on the green dissolution system of chitin and the preparation method of fu...

In this study, alkylated chitosan (AC) and diatom biosilica (DB) were combined to develop a safe and effective hemostatic composite sponge (AC-DB sponge) for hemorrhage control. Due to the procoagulant chemical structure of AC-DB sponge, it exhibited rapid hemostatic ability in vitro (clotting time was shortened by 78% than that of control group), with favorable biocompatibility (hemolysis ratio < 5%, no...

Abstract As technologies grew and charted its way into unfamiliar territories, one thing is for sure; the materials used itself requires to be advanced as far as the technology is concerned. As such, the need for the materials is to be durable, flexible, and controllable. Since the discovery of polymers, their life cycle was generally going on or recycled even when exposed to heat, light, biological, or chemical attack. When required, polymers can be doped or mixed with other compounds to make a...

Alkali/urea, a green dissolution system for chitosan, have been widely used in preparation of chitosan-derived materials. However, there are no related reports detail the structure stability and biocompatibility of chitosan in alkali/urea, which are important for its large-scale application. In this work, chitosan was dissolved in KOH/urea solution and stored at different temperature for different time. The structure, viscosity, molecule weight (Mw), degree of deacetylation (DD), and biocompatib...
