Abstract In this work, cellulose nanofibers (CNF) were obtained from sugarcane bagasse (SC) without high-energy mechanical treatments, using TEMPO-mediated oxidation. Variable NaClO concentrations were used to impart electrostatic repulsion between surface charged groups thus facilitating fibril separation. CNFs with diameters in the 3–5 nm range were obtained by oxidation of SC pulp with NaClO at 25 and 50 mmol/g. After a 30 min –sonication step, these CNFs were broken down into cellulose nanoc...

Kitchen waste hydrolysis residue (KWHR), which is produced in the bioproduction process from kitchen waste (KW), is usually wasted with potential threats to the environment. Herein, experiments were carried out to evaluate the potential of KWHR as adsorbent for dye (methylene blue, MB) removal from aqueous solution. The adsorbent was characterized using FT-IR and SEM. Adsorption results showed that the operating variables had great effects on the removal efficiency of MB. Kinetic study indicated...

The replacement of chemical desiccants, including silica gel and molecular sieves, with natural fiber is a novel and sustainable approach in industrial applications. High-fiber agricultural wastes are potential candidates for use in desiccant dehumidification. This study aimed to investigate the possibility of replacing chemical desiccants with low-cost agricultural waste of rice husk (RH) as a novel and sustainable alternative. The feasibility of using RH and its treated forms and blends as des...

Abstract In this study, activated carbon was developed from Ficus carica bast (FCBAC). The experiments were carried out to explore methylene blue (MB) uptake by FCBAC. The influence of various experimental factors such as contact time, initial dye concentration, adsorbent dosage, temperature and pH of dye solution was investigated. The adsorption equilibrium was represented with Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models. Langmuir and Tempkin equations were found to have the correlation coe...

A new route towards embedding fibrillated cellulose in a non-polar thermoset matrix without any use of organic solvent or chemical surface modification is presented. It is shown that microfibrillated lignocellulose made from cellulose with high residual lignin content is capable of stabilising an emulsion of unsaturated polyester resin in water due to its amphiphilic surface-chemical character. Upon polymerisation of the resin, thermoset microspheres embedded in a microfibrillated cellulose netw...

The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of surface treatment on the morphology and thermo-mechanical properties of bamboo fibers. The fibers are subjected to an alkali treatment using 4 wt % sodium hydroxide (NaOH) for 1 h. Mechanical measurements show that the present concentration has an insignificant effect on the fiber tensile strength. In addition, systematic experimental results characterizing the morphological aspects and thermal properties of the bamboo fibers are analyz...

Abstract null null Carbon nanoparticles (CNP) were synthesized through flame deposition method from a sustainable corn oil precursor. The morphology, particle size, surface chemistry, thermal stability, and zeta potential of the CNP were characterized. The batch adsorption of a cationic dye, methylene blue (MB), by the CNP at various concentrations, pH, and temperatures was evaluated to investigate the CNP's efficacy in industrial wastewater treatment applications. Results revealed the excellent...

Abstract Motivated by the significant scope which exists to generate value-added products from agricultural waste materials, in this work a comprehensive study was performed on the microstructure of alkali-treated coconut coir in order to evaluate its potential as an environmentally friendly absorbent. By investigating the influence of the alkali concentration, temperature and treatment time through a systematic Design of Experiments (DOE) approach, it was found that alkali-treated coconut coir ...
