Abstract
Strengthening of metals through nanoscale grain boundaries and coherent twin boundaries is manifested by a maximum strength-a phenomenon known as Hall-Petch breakdown. Different softening mechanisms are considered to occur for nanocrystalline and nanotwinned materials.
