Fine grained magnesium alloy AZ31 sheets were submitted to the accumulative roll bonding (ARB). After ARB, the microstructure of samples was refined, and the sheets exhibited pronounced texture. The amplitude-dependent internal friction (ADIF) was measured at room temperature. Microstructure changes as the increased dislocation density, grain size refinement, twins, and texture influenced the ADIF. A significant anisotropy of the properties was observed. Experimental results are discussed on the...

Commercially available AZ31 magnesium alloy was four times extruded in an equal rectangular channel using three different routes (A, B, and C). Micro tensile deformation tests were performed at room temperature with the aim to reveal any plastic anisotropy developed during the extrusion. Samples for micro tensile experiments were cut from extruded billets in different orientations with respect to the pressing direction. Information about the microstructure of samples was obtained using the elect...

The structure and properties of magnesium alloy WE43 are studied after homogenizing and rotary swaging deformation conducted in several stages with step lowering of the temperature from 400 to 325°C and increasing the extrusion ratio to 2.56 – 2.78. The deformation yields an ultrafine-grained (UFG) structure with a mean size of the structural components about 500 – 800 nm and particles of aMg41Nd5 phase with a mean size of about 300 – 400 nm. The formation of the UFG structure raises the strengt...

Accumulative roll bonding (ARB) is one of the methods of severe plastic deformation which is relevant for industrial production of sheets. While mechanical properties of several magnesium alloys subjected to the ARB process have been studied, the physical properties have been reported only for some magnesium alloys. These properties are influenced by the texture developed during the ARB process and the temperature load. In the presented contribution, we studied thermal conductivity of an AZ31 ma...

Pure microcrystalline magnesium (µMg) was reinforced with hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanoparticles and was fabricated by powder metallurgy process followed by hot extrusion. For comparison pure magnesium powder was consolidated by hot extrusion too. Both materials exhibited a significant fiber texture. Mg-hBN nanocomposites (nc) and pure Mg specimens were deformed between room temperature and 300 °C under tension and compression mode. The yield strength and ultimate tensile and compression st...

Deformation behaviour of rolled AZ31 sheets that were subjected to the accumulative roll bonding was investigated. Substantially refined microstructure of samples was achieved after the first and second pass through the rolling mill. Sheets texture was investigated using an X-ray diffractometer. Samples for tensile tests were cut either parallel or perpendicular to the rolling direction. Tensile tests were performed at temperatures ranging from room temperature up to 300 °C. Tensile plastic anis...

The amplitude-dependent internal friction of continuously-cast and rolled AZ31 magnesium alloy was measured in this study. Samples were annealed and quenched step by step; immediately after the treatment, the amplitude dependence of the logarithmic decrement was measured. Changes in the microstructure due to thermomechanical treatment were reflected in changes in the damping. Internal friction is influenced by the dislocation substructure and its modification due to solute atoms migration, micro...

The effect of severe plastic deformation on the structure, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility of the WE43 (Mg-Y-Nd-Zr) alloy earmarked for applications as bioresorbable material has been studied. The alloy was deformed by rotary swaging (RS), equal channel angular pressing (ECAP), and multiaxial deformation (MAD). The microstructure examination by transmission electron microscopy showed that all SPD modes lead to the formation of ultrafine-grained structure with a ...

Abstract null null Zirconium alloys are primarily used in nuclear applications as a cladding material due to its low neutron absorption, excellent mechanical strength, ductility, oxidation, and corrosion resistance properties. The effect of rotary-swaging feed rates (0.7 m/min, 1.25 m/min, and 2 m/min) and material-conditions (As-Received, Swaged, and Swaged + Annealed (732 °C/3 h)) on tensile, fracture toughness, and microstructural evolution of Zr-4 alloy were studied. Significant improvement ...

An extruded magnesium AZ31 magnesium alloy was processed by rotary swaging (RSW) and then deformed by tension and compression at room temperature. The work-hardening behaviour of 1–5 times swaged samples was analysed using Kocks-Mecking plots. Accumulation of dislocations on dislocation obstacles and twin boundaries is the deciding factor for the strain hardening. Profuse twinning in compression seems to be the reason for the higher hardening observed during compression. The main softening mecha...

Magnesium samples reinforced with 0.7, 1.4, and 2.4 vol.% of Inconel 718 particles were prepared using a disintegrated melt deposition technique followed by hot extrusion. Mechanical properties, thermal expansion, and damping were studied with the aim of revealing the particle influence on the microstructure, texture, tensile and compressive behavior, thermal expansion coefficient, and internal friction. The flow stresses are significantly influenced by the test temperature and the vol.% of part...
