Abstract Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the factors that affect the precipitation of vancomycin and ceftazidime which are currently used in intravitreal injections for infectious endophthalmitis. Methods: The minimum concentration required for precipitation of the 2 antibiotics was estimated by 2-fold dilution. In addition, the amount of the precipitate that formed was measured at 4, 3, 2, and 1 mL volumes, temperatures (37°C or 4°C), and in different medias (balanced salt sol...

PURPOSE. To investigate the precipitation process of a mixture of vancomycin and ceftazidime by equilibrium dialysis and determine its subsequent effect on the level of free antibiotics for treatment of endophthalmitis. METHODS. Concentrations of vancomycin and ceftazidime in an equilibrium dialysis chamber were measured during the equilibrium process by high-performance liquid chromatography Normal saline (NS), balanced salt solution (BSS), and vitreous were used separately as the medium of dia...

Editor,—The recommended treatment of endophthalmitis includes intravitreal injection of broad spectrum antibiotics. Vancomycin is the drug of choice for Gram positive bacteria, while Gram negative coverage can be obtained by either amikacin or ceftazidime. Owing to potential retinal toxicity with amikacin, the option of its substitution by ceftazidime seemed very attractive.1-7 Fiscella,8 and the pharmacological handbooks have already described physical incompatibility of vancomycin and ceftazid...

Abstract Emerging resistance of organisms to standard antibiotic therapy has forced clinicians to continually evaluate the best intraocular antibiotics for the treatment of endophthalmitis. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment with intraocular antibiotics are important factors in the successful management of endophthalmitis. Although drug combinations are necessary to cover the full range of bacteria causing endophthalmitis, antimicrobial synergy is probably less important in endophthalmiti...
