In this work, the relations between fracture surface roughness in mode I and the content of different carbon nanoparticles, graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) were systematically investigated. A block copolymer (BC) was also used to aid the dispersion process considering its role on fracture toughness. Both KIc and GIc were found to increase significantly with the addition of a BC along with carbon nanoparticles. Roughness measurements showed that the value of surface roughn...

The current study investigated the effect of adding a carbon nanotube–alumina (CNT–Al2O3) hybrid on the fracture toughness of epoxy nanocomposites. The CNT–Al2O3 hybrid was synthesised by growing CNTs on Al2O3 particles via the chemical vapour deposition method. The CNTs were strongly attached onto the Al2O3 particles, which served to transport and disperse the CNTs homogenously, and to prevent agglomeration in the CNTs. The experimental results demonstrated that the CNT–Al2O3 hybrid-filled epox...

Abstract Chemically reduced graphene oxide (CRGO) sheets grafted with poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) polymer were prepared by an emulsion polymerization to improve the stress transfer in the PMMA/CRGO composites. The electron microscopy observations revealed that the PMMA polymer grafting modification produced good dispersion/exfoliation of CRGO sheets in PMMA matrix and strong sheet/matrix interfacial interaction, leading to efficient stress transfer in the composites. The dynamical mechanica...

In this work, nanocomposites with simultaneous dispersion of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and montmorillonite clays in an epoxy matrix were prepared by in situ polymerization. A high energy sonication was employed as the dispersion method, without the aid of solvents in the process. The simultaneous dispersion of clays with carbon nanotubes (CNT) in different polymeric matrices has shown a synergic potential of increasing mechanical properties and electrical conductivity. Two different m...

Abstract The effect of the addition of a combination of rigid nanofillers and soft rubber nanoparticles on the fracture toughness of epoxy resins was studied. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), as rigid nanofillers, and polystyrene-polybutadiene-poly(methyl metacrylate) (SBM) triblock copolymers, as rubber nanoparticles that self-assemble in the epoxy matrix, were used. Fracture tests according to ESIS TC4 protocol were performed on neat epoxy, epoxy reinforced with CNTs, epoxy nanostructured with SBM tri...

Abstract Although the effects of the incorporation of nanoparticles in polymer matrices are deeply studied in the literature, the mechanisms that promote higher properties are not well reported. In this paper, the reinforcement and toughening mechanisms that act on nanoclay/epoxy nanocomposites were studied. For this purpose, two types of nanoclays were used (sodium nanoclay and organophilic nanoclay) in three different concentrations. We propose the reinforcement effectiveness concept, which pr...

Abstract Epoxy composites filled with 2D chemically reduced graphene oxide (CRGO) sheets and preformed 3D powdered rubber (PR) nanoparticles were fabricated to investigate the effect of hybrid nanofillers on the electrical, thermal and mechanical properties as well as fracture toughness. As expected, the presence of CRGO sheets endows epoxy with electrical conductivity and enhances its thermal properties, stiffness and toughness; while the addition of PR results in significant reductions in ther...

Abstract The addition of nanoparticles has been reported as an option to increase the fracture toughness of thermosetting polymers without compromising the stiffness. In this paper, alumina or carbon nanotubes (CNTs), in three different concentrations, were dispersed in an epoxy resin. Mechanical properties were measured through tensile test and the results indicate increases for all nanocomposites, with a maximum for the addition of 0.5% of CNTs (17% in elastic modulus and 22% in ultimate stres...

In this work, we explain why the incorporation of organically modified nano-clay into unsaturated polyester resins, unlike epoxy, does not improve their fracture toughness despite continuing aggressive research activities based on this approach. The mechanism behind this phenomenon is explored by studying the effect of mixing method on improving the degree of exfoliation in simple nanocomposites and its final effect on fracture behaviour. Rheometry and X-ray diffraction show that the two mixing ...

Abstract From the mechanical design viewpoint, the inherent brittleness of thermosetting polymeric systems is a major disadvantage that limits their extensive applications. Micro- and nanoparticles incorporated into polymeric systems increase the toughness and enhance the fracture performance of such materials. This chapter first provides an overview of fracture toughness parameters based on the stress intensity factor and energy release rate. Then a review of the most common toughening techniqu...

Abstract Nowadays using composites reinforced by embedded microcapsules containing reactive agents are a promising approach to enhance the performance of materials. In the current study, urea-formaldehyde microcapsules (UFMs) containing an oxidizable oil phase were synthesized and were modified by 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). Different mechanical analyzes such as impact, compression and three-point testing were conducted. The results showed that adding a critical amount of silane (2 wt%...
