To compare the related factors or manifestations of the two most common isolates of post-operative endophthalmitis, which were Enterococcus spp. and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) in South Korea. Medical records were reviewed for cases of post-operative endophthalmitis caused by Enterococcus spp. and CNS at eight institutions between January 2004 and July 2010. Various factors including age, sex, residence, systemic diseases, smoking and drinking history, and best corrected visual acuity...

Purpose: To report 2 cases of recurrent Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) endophthalmitis after uneventful phacoemulsification and posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Case summary: Case 1: A healthy, 75-year-old female presented with a sudden visual loss and ocular pain 2 days after phacoemulsification and IOL implantation. After successful treatment with intravitreal antibiotics injection, the infection was apparently cleared. At 1 month after the initial presentation, recu...

We present the first reported case of late recurrence of postoperative Enterococcus faecalis endophthalmitis after cataract surgery in a 45-year-old diabetic man. Culture-positive E faecalis endophthalmitis was diagnosed 2 days after uneventful phacoemulsification. Early vitrectomy with intravitreal and subconjunctival vancomycin and amikacin and topical vancomycin resulted in apparently complete clinical resolution after 4 months and a best corrected visual acuity of 20/25. Recurrent endophthal...

Abstract Purpose To investigate the spectrum of organisms causing culture-proven endophthalmitis and their sensitivities to commonly used antimicrobial agents. Design Retrospective, noncomparative, consecutive case series. Methods Medical records were reviewed of all patients with culture-proven endophthalmitis at a single institution between January 1, 1996, and December 31, 2001. Endophthalmitis categories included postoperative, posttraumatic, endogenous, and miscellaneous (for example, kerat...

Abstract Purpose Infectious endophthalmitis is a devastating, yet rare complication following intraocular surgery, trauma, and systemic illness. Given its rare incidence, few patients would be expected to have more than one episode of infectious endophthalmitis in their lifetime. We reviewed our patients who were diagnosed with, and treated for, at least two separate episodes of endophthalmitis. Design A retrospective, consecutive case series was conducted of patients managed at Associated Retin...

Herein, a sturgeon skin gelatine film combined with esculin and ferric citrate was developed as an edible food packaging material to prevent Enterococcus faecalis (E. faecalis) contamination. E. faecalis is able to hydrolyse esculin in the film, and then the hydrolysed product, esculetin, combines with ferric citrate to form a brown-black phenol iron complex. This phenomenon can be observed easily after 48 h of contamination under visible light, and it can be determined under 365 nm ultraviolet ...
