Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance Saussurea involucrate (Kar. et Kir.) Sch. -Bip is an endangered species of the Compositae family, and this species has long been used for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, dysmenorrhea, stomachache, and altitude sickness in Uighur folk and Chinese medicine. Aim of the study This study aimed to investigate the different therapeutic efficacy of alcohol infusion (SEI) and water decoction (SWD) of S. involucrata in treating rheumatoid arthritis using comp...

Seven new neolignans (1–2, 7–11) and five known compounds (3–6, 12) were isolated from the 70% EtOH extract of hawthorn seeds. Their structures were determined by spectroscopic analyses. The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities of all the isolates were investigated. Most of the isolates showed moderate radical scavenging activity in the DPPH assay and significant activities in the ABTS and FRAP assays. Furthermore, compounds 7–12 exhibited marked nitric oxide (NO) inhibition and compound...

A new sesquiterpenoid, 10α-methoxyartemisinic acid (1) was isolated from Saussurea lappa roots along with two known compounds, costunolide (2) and dehydrocostus lactone (3) by high-speed countercurrent chromatography with purities of 85, 95 and 98%, respectively. Their structures were determined on the basis of spectral data including 1D and 2D NMR and HREIMS.

Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance Saussurea involucrata Matsum. & Koidz. is an endangered species of the Asteraceae family, growing in the high mountains of central Asia. It has been, and is, widely used in traditional Uyghur, Mongolian and Kazakhstan medicine as well as in Traditional Chinese Medicine as Tianshan Snow Lotus (Chinese: 天山雪蓮). In traditional medical theory, S. involucrata can promote blood circulation, thereby alleviating all symptoms associated with poor circulation. It als...

Phytochemical study of Gochnatia polymorpha (Less) Cabr. ssp. floccosa Cabr. trunk bark, guided by antiproliferative assays on 10 human cancer cell lines and the VERO cell line, yielded six known compounds identified as the triterpene bauerenyl acetate, the guaianolide 11α,13-dihydrozaluzanin C and the dimeric guaianolides 10-desoxygochnatiolide A, gochnatiolide A, 8-hydroxi-10-desoxygochnatiolide A and 8-hydroxigochnatiolide A. Extracts, fractions of extracts and isolated compounds were tested ...

Abstract Bioassay-directed separation of the ethyl acetate extract from the aerial parts of Saussurea involucrata (Kar. et Kir. ex Maxim) led to the isolation of three new sesquiterpene lactones sausinlactones A (1), B (2), C (3) and six known ones (4–9). The structures were established by spectroscopic data (UV, IR, HRESIMS, 1D and 2D NMR). CD technique was also employed to determine the absolute configurations of new compounds 1–3. The anti-inflammatory activities of compounds 1–9 and antitumo...

Abstract In the course of a larger screen of 1800 plant and fungal extracts, the ethyl acetate extract of Saussurea costus roots potently inhibited the growth of Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense. Subsequent HPLC based activity profiling led to the identification of the sesquiterpene lactones arbusculin B (1), α-cyclocostunolide (2), costunolide (3), and dehydrocostuslactone (4). They were tested for in vitro antitrypanosomal activities and cytotoxicity alongside the structurally related sesquiterp...

Saussurea involucrata produces several bioactive flavonoids that are derived from the phenylpropanoid pathway. To determine these flavonoids, a sensitive high performance liquid chromatography electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry method (LC-ESI-MS) was developed. Chromatographic separation was then performed. The gradient elution was optimised to give high recoveries and satisfactory chromatographic resolution. Flavonoid detection was carried out using an ion trap as mass analyser. Paramete...

Saussurea lappa (Decne.) Sch.Bip is a well known herbal medicine has been extensively used for many therapeutic purposes. In this article, we have accomplished targeted profiling of S. lappa roots samples collected from different locations (Pangi, Lahaul, Barot and Kullu) of the western Himalayan region using NMR. This study allowed us to assigned four major sesquiterpenes of this plant, including costunolide (CL), dehydrocostus lactone (DCL), alantolactone (AL), isoalantolactone (IAL). Quantifi...
