Illnesses caused by Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STECs) can be life threatening, such as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The STECs most frequently identified by USDA’s Microbiological Data Program (MDP) carried toxin gene subtypes stx1a and/or stx2a.
