Abstract In this study, icariin (ICA), one of the main active ingredients of Herba Epimedii for osteogenesis, was applied to functionalize electrospinning poly( l -lactide) (PLLA) fibrous membrane via an intermediate layer of polydopamine (PDA) to obtain enhanced cytocompatibility and osteogenic activity. For this purpose, an array of PDA-coated PLLA fibrous membranes (PLLA-0.5PDA, PLLA-1PDA, PLLA-2PDA, PLLA-5PDA) and ICA-modified PLLA-2PDA fibrous membranes (PLLA-2PDA-10ICA, PLLA-2PDA-20ICA, PLLA-2PDA-40ICA) were successively prepared. Successful modification of PDA and ICA onto PLLA fibrous membranes was verified by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Besides, the hydrophilicity as well as tensile properties of PLLA fibrous membrane were improved after surface modified with PDA and ICA. In vitro cells culture experiments revealed that the adhesion, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of MC3T3-E1 cells on the PLLA fibrous membrane were significantly improved by successively immobilized with PDA and ICA. Moreover, the concentration of ICA immobilized on the fibrous membranes has the complicated effects on the MC3T3-E1 cells behavior. The PLLA-2PDA-ICA fibrous membranes with low ICA concentration promoted the cell adhesion and proliferation, but on the contrary, those with high ICA concentration were more beneficial to the enhancement in ALP activity and calcium deposition.

Abstract To understand the effects of GRGDF modification on MC3T3-E1 cell behavior, we cultured these cells onto a biomimetic liquid crystalline matrix modified with GRGDF peptide (OPC-GA-RGD). Successful immobilization of GRGDF on the liquid crystalline surface was verified by fluorescent labeling, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). OPC-GA-RGDs retained its liquid crystalline feature after surface modificat...

Abstract The aim of this study was to provide a convenient surface modification method for polyurethane (PU) membrane and evaluate its influence on hydrophilicity, antibacterial activity and cell functions, which are the most important factors for wound dressings. For this purpose, chitooligosaccharide (COS) was modified onto the surface of PU membrane based on the self-polymerization of dopamine (DOPA). Abstract Nerve tissue engineering (TE) requires biomimetic scaffolds providing essential chemical and topographical cues for nerve regeneration. Poly(glycerol sebacate) (PGS) is a biodegradable and elastic polymer that has gained great interest as a TE scaffolding biomaterial. However, uncured PGS is difficult to be electrospun into nanofibers. PGS would, therefore, require the addition of electrospinning agents. In this study, we modified PGS by using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP)...

Abstract A porous shape memory scaffold with both biomimetic structures and electrical conductivity properties is highly promising for nerve tissue engineering applications. In this study, a new shape memory polyurethane polymer which consists of inorganic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) segments with organic poly(e-caprolactone) (PCL) segments was synthesized. Based on this poly(PCL/PDMS urethane), a series of electrically conductive nanofibers were electrospun by incorporating different amounts of...

In this work, electrospun poly(ether sulfone) (PES) nanofibrous membranes coated with hydrophilic polydopamine (PES-PDA) were successfully prepared. As a separator of lithium-ion batteries, the prepared PESPDA nanofibrous membrane shows ultrahigh porosity, due to the extra-large surface area of the nanofibers. Moreover, good thermostability of PES and polydopamine also results in the low shrinkage of the membrane under high temperature. As a result of the large number of amine groups and phenoli...

Herein, for the first time, we combined poly-l-lactic acid (PLLA) with a strontium borosilicate bioactive glass (BBG-Sr) using electrospinning to fabricate a composite bioactive PLLA membrane loaded with 10% (w/w) of BBG-Sr glass particles (PLLA-BBG-Sr). The composites were characterised by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and microcomputer tomography (μ-CT), and the results showed that we successfully fabricated smooth and uniform fibres (1–3 μm in width) with a homogeneous distribution of BB...

The design and development of functional biomimetic systems for programmed stem cell response is a field of topical interest. To mimic bone extracellular matrix, we present an innovative strategy for constructing drug-loaded composite nanofibrous scaffolds in this study, which could integrate multiple cues from calcium phosphate mineral, bioactive molecule, and highly ordered fiber topography for the control of stem cell fate. Briefly, inspired by mussel adhesion mechanism, a polydopamine (pDA)-...

Abstract In order to improve the mechanical properties of poly( l -lactide) (PLLA), two types of whiskers, rod-like MgO whiskers (MgO-Ws) and needle-like chitin whiskers (CHN-Ws), were prepared and then surface modified with l -lactide to obtain grafted MgO-Ws and CHN-Ws (g-MgO-Ws and g-CHN-Ws), respectively. Subsequently, the initial and grafted MgO-Ws and CHN-Ws were introduced into a PLLA matrix together or singly to prepare PLLA/MgO-Ws/CHN-Ws and PLLA/g-MgO-Ws/g-CHN-Ws composites via injecti...

In this study, the PLGA/ICA/Ca-P hybrid coating was fabricated on pure Mg to enhance corrosion resistance and osteogenic differentiation for pure Mg. The results showed that doping PLGA on the Ca-P pretreatment coating on the pure Mg could improve the defects (micropores and cracks) of the Ca-P pretreatment coating, as a result of the better corrosion resistance compared with the pure Mg and Ca-P coating. More importantly, the in vitro results of MTT and quantitative PCR analysis suggested that ...

Recently, extreme ultraviolet (EUV) radiation has been increasingly used to modify polymers. Properties such as the extremely short absorption lengths in polymers and the very strong interaction of EUV photons with materials may play a key role in achieving new biomaterials. The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of EUV radiation on cell adhesion to the surface of modified polymers that are widely used in medicine: poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE), poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), ...

Abstract For bone tissue engineering applications, scaffolds that mimic the porous structure of the extracellular matrix are highly desirable. Herein, we employ a PCL/HA-based scaffold with a double-scaled architecture of small pores coupled to larger ones. To improve the osteoinductivity of the scaffold, we incorporate two different growth factors via polydopamine (PDA) coating. As a first step, we identify the maximum amount of PDA that can be deposited onto the scaffold. Next, to allow for th...

Nanodiamonds (NDs) have been used as drug delivery vehicles due to their low toxicity and biocompatibility. Recently, it has been reported that NDs have also osteogenic differentiation capacity. However, their capacity using NDs alone is not enough. To significantly improve their osteogenic activity, we developed icariin (ICA)-functionalized NDs (ICA-NDs) and evaluated whether ICA-NDs enhance their in vitro osteogenic capacity. Unmodified NDs and ICA-NDs showed nanosized particles that were sphe...
