Abstract
Cathode materials in the form of complex metal oxides LiNi x Mn y Co1–x–y O2 (0.3 ≤ x ≤ 0.6; 0.2 ≤ y ≤ 0.4) obtained by different methods, such as a solid state method and a method of thermal destruction of organometallic compounds in oil, are studied. The results of the elemental analysis, TGA/DSC, XRD, SEM, TEM, and electrochemical tests are presented. It is found that complex metal oxides obtained by the method of thermal destruction of organometallic compounds in oil are composed of primary nanocrystallites (up to 100 nm) coated by a nanoscale carbon layer that can significantly improve the electrochemical characteristics of the basic lithium-ion battery based thereon.

We have synthesized and characterized mixed oxides of various compositions which are excellent precursors for the preparation of cathode materials for lithium ion batteries. The materials consist of mixed oxide nanoparticles about 2 nm in size, stabilized in a hydrocarbon matrix. We describe the fabrication of such materials and present transmission and scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction data for them and their basic electrochemical characteristics.

Abstract Layered Li 1.2 Mn 0.54 Ni 0.13 Co 0.13 O 2 materials were synthesized via spray pyrolysis. Synthesis conditions were varied in order to understand their effect on the electrochemical properties of the material. Three process parameters were evaluated: aerosol flow rate, reactor wall temperature and precursor concentration. Electrochemical results show excellent batch-to-batch reproducibility and no non-uniformities, as measured by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Phase purity...

Many scientists have focused on the problem of improving the electrochemical performance (specific capacity, electrical conductivity, stability, and other characteristics) of cathode materials for lithium ion batteries. Nanostructuring and the use of cathode nanomaterials offer an effective solution to this problem. Here, we describe a new method of producing cathode materials for lithium ion batteries using nanoparticles with the composition Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.4Co0.2O2/C, in which the mixed oxides h...

Abstract In this study we report the effects of the Ni content on the electrochemical properties and the structural and thermal stabilities of Li[Ni x Co y Mn z ]O 2 ( x = 1/3, 0.5, 0.6, 0.7, 0.8 and 0.85) synthesized via a coprecipitation method. The electrochemical and thermal properties of Li[Ni x Co y Mn z ]O 2 are strongly dependent on its composition. An increase of the Ni content results in an increase of specific discharge capacity and total residual lithium content but the corresponding...

Abstract Structural changes for LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 cathode material of lithium-ion battery with and without electrolyte during heating from 25 to 600 °C are investigated using synchrotron based in situ X-ray diffraction. LiNi 0.5 Co 0.2 Mn 0.3 O 2 without electrolyte first converts from a layered structure to disordered LiM 2 O 4 -type spinel and M 3 O 4 -type spinel phase as the temperature increases, then two different types of disordered spinel phases are co-existed up to 600 °C and n...

Abstract The core–shell structure cathode material Li(Ni 0.8 Co 0.15 Al 0.05 ) 0.8 (Ni 0.5 Mn 0.5 ) 0.2 O 2 (LNCANMO) was synthesized via a co-precipitation method. Its applicability as a cathode material for lithium ion batteries was investigated. The core–shell particle consists of LiNi 0.8 Co 0.15 Al 0.05 O 2 (LNCAO) as the core and a LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.5 O 2 as the shell. The thickness of the LiNi 0.5 Mn 0.5 O 2 layer is approximately 1.25 μm, as estimated by field emission scanning electron micr...

Abstract Spinel LiNi 0.5 Mn 1.5 O 4 materials are synthesized by one-step precipitation method. Ammonium carbonate is used as the precipitating agent to obtain a more precise feed ratio without recourse to traditional washing. After annealing at high temperature, the spherical particles become angular and show high levels of crystallinity. The synthesized samples are evaluated using powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and electrochemical testing. The samples synthesized with ...

Abstract LiMn 1.5 Ni 0.5 O 4 has been synthesized by an ultrasonic-assisted sol–gel method. The precursor is heat treated at a series of temperatures from 650 °C to 1000 °C. The structure and physical–chemical properties of the as-prepared powder are investigated by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), cyclic voltammetry (CV) thermal gravimetric and galvanostatic charge–discharge tests in detail. As temperature goes up, the particle size increases, the reactivity o...

Abstract In this study, the mechanism of enhanced performance of ZrO 2 -coated LiCoO 2 especially at high potential range is systematically investigated. Firstly, when overcharging to 4.5 V (higher than 4.2 V, the normal cutoff charging potential), phase transformation from H1 to H2 takes place with less volume expansion for ZrO 2 -coated LiCoO 2 (1.2% and 2.2% for as-received one). EIS analysis indicates the growth of interfacial impedance during charging/discharging can be effectively suppress...

We systematically investigated the effect of both cobalt presence and lithium concentration on the structure, physical properties, and electrochemical behavior of the studied samples. The electrochemical performance of the cobalt-containing compounds showed much less dep...
