Modelling the effect of tufted yarns in composite T-joints

This paper presents a finite-element (FE) simulation of the mechanical response of a composite T-joint subjected to tensile (pull-out) loading. The FE model includes an analysis of the effect of tufted yarns and interlaminar properties on the ultimate load to failure and a comparison between the full and strip FE model. The FE results show that the ultimate load to failure increases when the tufted yarns are introduced. The tufted configuration increases the deflection capacity of the T-joint, and therefore more energy is required to cause ultimate failure. The FE prediction was validated using experimental data for E-glass fibre/epoxy T-joints.
