College students' Internet addiction and social support:correlation and regression

Abstract
Objective To investigate the relationship between Internet addiction and social support in college students. Methods A total of 800 college students were assessed by Young's Diagnostic Questionnaire and then divided into an Internet addiction(IAD) group and a non-addiction group.Self-compiled background information questionnaire and Social Support Inventory were used to investigate social-psychological factors of addiction.The data were statistically analyzed by SPSS 13.0 software.Results Internet addicts and non-addicts had a significant difference in the utilization of social support,t=-3.30,P0.01.Social support,objective support,and utilization of support had significant negative correlations with Internet addiction(r=-0.102,-0.071,-0.116),and the individual utilization of social support had a predictive function on Internet addiction,β'=0.197,P0.01.Conclusions Social support is one of the social-psychological factors of Internet addiction.In the treatment of addiction,we should consider this factor.
