Abstract Objectives Existing evidence suggests a strong relationship between tinnitus and emotion. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of short-term emotional changes along valence and arousal dimensions on tinnitus outcomes. Emotional stimuli were presented in two different modalities: auditory and visual. The authors hypothesized that (1) negative valence (unpleasant) stimuli and/or high arousal stimuli will lead to greater tinnitus loudness and annoyance than positive valen...

First published in 1845, Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “The Raven” has inspired many. For Poe himself, the raven—relentlessly repeating the word “Nevermore”—symbolizes a tragic and everlasting remembrance. Today, the poem has been translated into many languages, and has been interpreted in manifold ways. It has also been illustrated by numerous artists, and has been an inspiration for individuals looking for tattoo images. The key question in this chapter is why individuals chose a tattoo depicting an ...
Although scholars in music education acknowledge the speciality and legitimacy of jazz education, they do not provide the philosophical bases to justify its "special" status or guide its organization and conduct. Instead, they append brief endorsements1 to a false assumption: that the philosophy of music education as aesthetic education will suffice to explain the nature and value of jazz and jazz education. Unfortunately, this philosophy rests upon a one-dimensional theory of musical structure ...

RECENT philosophical work on self-deception revolves around two interrelated collections of paradoxes. One collection focuses on the state of self-deception. The other is centrally concerned with the processes that produce this state. I shall call them, respectively, the static and the dynamic paradoxes. In both cases, paradox is generated by the application of certain common assumptions about interpersonal deception to the intrapersonal variety. For example, it is frequently held that in order ...
Social pressure influences human behavior including risk taking, but the psychological and neural underpinnings of this process are not well understood. We used the human lesion method to probe the role of ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) in resisting adverse social pressure in the presence of risk. Thirty-seven participants (11 with vmPFC damage, 12 with brain damage outside the vmPFC and 14 without brain damage) were tested in driving simulator scenarios requiring left-turn decisions acr...

This thesis covers key issues within clinical and health psychology over three chapters. Chapter 1 examines coeliac disease and its impact in older people to help provide much needed insight into the problems encountered. Coeliac disease in older age has often been ignored within the literature and thus, little is known of its impact. This literature review provides a clearer understanding of what is already known as well as highlighting areas which need further exploration. Chapter 2 centers on...
