Soil cracking is a common natural phenomenon. The existence of soil cracks has significant effects on the engineering properties of clayey soil, and can cause significant problems in geotechnical, geological, and environmental aspects. Understanding of the potential mechanisms of soil cracking is essential in assessments of potential damages to earthen infrastructures. We review the past research efforts devoted to the experimental investigations and applications of fracture mechanics in soil cr...

A reliability analysis framework for the stochastic simulation of slope progressive failure is proposed in the current work. Progressive failure is addressed as a local failure propagation process that takes place along individual segments upon a critical slip surface. The probabilities of progressive failure are evaluated by transition probabilities and Markov chains theory. Slope stability computations are performed by elastoplastic finite element models. The point estimate method is used for ...

Abstract The shear mechanical behaviour of slip zone soil is of great significance for the stability analysis of landslides. Based on the shear deformation-failure characteristics of slip zone soil and the statistical damage theory, a shear constitutive model is proposed to describe the shear stress - displacement relation of slip zone soil. Parameters in the proposed model have clear physical-mechanical meaning, and can be easily obtained by shear tests. The shear constitutive model is verified...

Abstract Knowledge of the mechanical properties of compacted bentonite is essential to assessing the performance of an engineered barrier system in a high-level radioactive waste repository. In this study, direct shear tests and uniaxial compression tests were conducted on compacted Gaomiaozi bentonite with a dry density of 1.7聽g/cm3 to investigate its stiffness and strength characteristics at various initial suction levels. Specimens were found to exhibit brittle failure within an initial sucti...

Uncertainties in geotechnical parameters significantly affect the stability evaluation of an ancient landslide, especially when considering the strain-softening behavior. Due to the great difficulty in obtaining the probability density distribution of geoparameters, an interval nonprobability reliability analysis framework combined with numerical strain-softening constitutive relations was established in this paper. Interval variables were defined as the uncertain parameters in the strain-soften...
