Progressive failure of surface microstructure during sample-scale shearing flow

This paper investigates mechanisms that cause surface microstructure to progressively slip apart during ongoing plastic flow. Four processes of localized slip can separate microstructure at a free surface while leaving underlying microstructure connected.
