Abstract
Abstract Liquid-phase microextraction (LPME) has been investigated for trace analysis in the present work in conjunction with fibre-optic-based micro-spectrophotometry which accommodates sample volume of 1 μL placed between the two ends of optical fibres. Methods have been evolved for the determination of (i) 1–100 μM and 0.5–20 μM of thiols by single drop microextraction (SDME) and LPME in 25 μL of the organic solvent, respectively, involving their reaction with the Ellman reagent and ion pair microextraction of thiolate ion formed; (ii) 70 μg to 7 mg L −1 of chlorine/chlorine dioxide by headspace in-drop reaction with alternative reagents, viz. , mixed phenylhydrazine-4-sulphonic acid and N -(1-naphthyl)ethylenediamine dihydrochloride, o -dianisidine, o -tolidine, and N , N -diethyl- p -phenylenediamine; (iii) 0.2–4 mg L −1 of ammonia by reaction with 2,4-dinitro-1-fluorobenzene to give 2,4-dinitroaniline which was diazotized and coupled with 1-naphthylamine, the resulting dye was subjected to preconcentration by solid-phase extraction and LPME; and (iv) 25–750 μg L −1 of iodide/total iodine by oxidation of iodide by 2-iodosobenzoate, microextraction of iodine in organic solvent, and re-extraction into aqueous starch-iodide reagent drop held in the organic phase. LPME using 25–30 μL of organic solvent was found to produce more sensitive results than SDME. The cuvetteless spectrophotometry as used in combination with sample handling techniques produced limits of detection of analytes which were better than obtained by previously reported spectrophotometry.

As a long-lived beta-emitting radioisotope of iodine, 129I is produced both naturally and as a result of human nuclear activities. At present time, the main part of 129I in the environment originates from the human nuclear activity, especially the releases from the spent nuclear fuel reprocessing plants, the 129I/127I ratios have being reached to values of 10−10 to 10−4 in the environment from 10−12 in the pre-nuclear era. In this article, we review the occurrence, sources, inventory, and concen...

Abstract In recent years, liquid-phase microextraction (LPME), a microscale implementation of liquid–liquid extraction, has become a very popular sample pretreatment technique because it combines extraction and enrichment, and is inexpensive, easy to operate and nearly solvent-free. Especially so in hollow fiber-protected LPME, sample cleanup is also effected. Essentially, owing to its high sample-to-extracting solvent volume ratio, LPME can achieve high analyte enrichment. Since its advent, the...

Abstract A novel optical sensor based on a redox reaction for the determination of iodide has been developed. The optode membrane is constructed by immobilization of methyltrioctylammonium chloride on triacetylcellulose polymer. The exchange of chloride as counter ion with iodate in the membrane changes the color to yellow, when it is placed in acidic solution of iodide. The sensor can readily be regenerated by 0.1 mol L−1 NaOH in less than 15 s. The optode has a linear range of 3.94 × 10−6 to 5...

Abstract Liquid–liquid extraction (LLE) is widely used as a pre-treatment technique for separation and preconcentration of both organic and inorganic analytes from aqueous samples. Nevertheless, it has several drawbacks, such as emulsion formation or the use of large volumes of solvents, which makes LLE expensive and labour intensive. Therefore, miniaturization of conventional liquid–liquid extraction is needed. The search for alternatives to the conventional LLE using negligible volumes of extr...

Abstract A novel and simple spectrophotometric method for the determination of Captopril with sodium 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonate is established in this paper. The detailed reaction mechanism is proposed and discussed. It is based on the fact that captopril can catalyze the reaction between sodium 1,2-naphthoquinone-4-sulfonate and hydroxyl ion to form 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone in buffer solution of pH 13.00. Beer's law is obeyed in a range of 0.64–80 μg mL −1 at the maximal absorption wave...

Abstract The direct coupling between ionic liquid-based single-drop microextraction and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry is proposed for the rapid and simple determination of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes isomers (BTEX) in water samples. The extraction procedure exploits not only the high affinity of the selected ionic liquid (1-methyl-3-octyl-imidazolium hexaflourophosphate) to these aromatic compounds but also its special properties like viscosity, low vapour pressure and immi...

Abstract In this work, a microfluidic chlorine gas sensor based on gas–liquid interface absorption and chemiluminescence detection was described. The liquid chemiluminescence reagent-alkaline luminol solution can be stably sandwiched between two convex halves of a microchannel by surface tension. When chlorine gas was introduced into the micro device, it was dissolved into the interfacial luminol solution and transferred to ClO − , and simultaneously luminol was excited and chemiluminescence emi...

Abstract null null A novel method based on diffused reflectance Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (DRS-FTIR) was employed for iodate determination in food grade salt and food products. The method attained sensitivity that was comparable to or better than that in most of the contemporary spectrophotometric methods. This was realized through a combination of azo dye formation and dispersive liquid–liquid microextraction of dye when a 37-fold enrichment was obtained. FT-IR enabled integrating...

Abstract A new mode of headspace liquid-phase microextraction termed in-vessel headspace liquid-phase microextraction (IV-HS-LPME) has been developed. A plastic vessel was used as a holder for an extraction phase. Problems with drop stability, limitations in the stirring speed, and too little volume of the acceptor phase have been completely eliminated. The proposed approach is fully compatible with ordinary instruments and microcuvettes used in spectrophotometry. The potential of the method was...
