Kinetics of discontinuous coarsening of cellular precipitate in a Ni-8 at.% in alloy

Abstract The morphology and growth kinetics of the cellular precipitate and products of two discontinuous coarsening reactions have been studied in the temperature range 710–1025 K. The NiIn alloy was observed to decompose completely by cellular precipitation reaction into a lamellar structure consisting of alternate lamellae of α and φ phases at all aging temperatures. The fine lamellar structure of the primary cells decomposed into a coarse lamellar structure in two stages. In the first stage, the secondary cells with larger interlamellar spacing decomposed the primary cells. In the second stage, the tertiary cells were also observed to decompose the primary cells. The primary cell growth data were analysed by using theories of Cahn, Hillert, Turnbull, and, Petermann and Hornbogen. The secondary and tertiary cell growth data were analysed by using theories of Livingston and Cahn and Petermann and Hornbogen. The driving force available for the transformation was calculated from the regular solution model. From the diffusivity values, it has been concluded that the growth of primary, secondary and tertiary cells occurs by diffusion of indium along the migrating grain boundaries.

Abstract A description of physical factors governing discontinuous precipitation yielded a model some years ago which is now improved by removing some limitations, one after the other. In one version, the model now yields explicit expressions for the growth rate, the spacing, the remaining supersaturation and the composition at the three-phase junctions. Another version can be applied to non-ideal systems with high solute contents and high supersaturations.

Abstract The self-diffusion coefficients of copper in copper-rich Cu-Sn, Cu-In and Cu-Sb solid solutions containing up to 3 at.% Sn, 3 at.% In and 1.7 at.% Sb, respectively, in the temperature range between 1005 and 1145 K have been determined by the serial sectioning method with radioactive tracer 64Cu. Abstract Secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) has been used to study the impurity diffusion ion of indium in nickel single crystals over the temperature range of 777 to 1513 K. The diffusion coefficients ranged from 4.1 × 10−17 to 2.4 × 10−9 cm2 s−1. Comparison of these values with radiotracer data in the literature shows very good agreement. Abstract The influence of niobium and vanadium additions on the precipitation behaviour in a 24Cr–18Mn–1N austenitic stainless steel is characterised during ageing at temperatures from 800 to 1100 °C.
