Abstract Copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) modified graphite electrode prepared by mechanical immobilisation method has been used for the amperometric determination of sulphite, which can be extended for the determination of SO 2 in air after absorbing the pollutant in sodium hydroxide solution. This method is based upon the electrocatalytic oxidation of sulphite by the modified electrode. The pH of the medium for oxidation should be in the range of 3.5–8.0. The range of determination of SO 2 is from 5.1 to 30.7 ppm. The presence of H 2 S with SO 2 will interfere in the determination. This can be eliminated by precipitating H 2 S as CuS.

CO2 is electrochemically reduced to CH4, C2H4, and alcohols in aqueous electrolytes at Cu electrode with high current density. CO2 is initially reduced to adsorbed CO and further to hydrocarbons and alcohols. This paper describes macroscopic electrolytic reduction of CO at a Cu electrode in various electrolyte solutions in order to reveal the unique properties of Cu electrode in comparison with Fe and Ni electrodes. The reaction products from the Cu electrode are CH4, C2H4, C2H5OH, n-C3H7OH, CH3...

This work extends the concept of in situ electrochemical stripping sensors to environmentally important metals that are not readily accumulated by amalgamation. A renewable-reagent sensor has thus been designed to accommodate the complex formation and adsorptive accumulation steps of adsorptive stripping protocols. Such flow probe relies on the delivery of a ligand solution through a microdialysis sampling tube and transport of the resulting complex to a downstream adsorptive stripping detector....

Abstract Biosensors show the potential to complement laboratory-based analytical methods for environmental applications. Although biosensors for potential environmental-monitoring applications have been reported for a wide range of environmental pollutants, from a regulatory perspective the decision to develop a biosensor method for an environmental application should consider several interrelated issues. These issues are discussed in terms of the needs, policies, and mechanisms associated with ...

Abstract Abrasive stripping voltammetry is a new electroanalytical technique designed for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of solid materials. It is based upon a preliminary mechanical transfer of trace amounts of a solid sample onto the surface of an electrode. All conventional electrochemical measuring methods can be used. The technique is applicable in many fields of solid state analysis and for fundamental studies of the electrochemistry of solid compounds.

Abstract Sulfite is a largely used preservative, and represents an analyte of interest, whose level should be carefully monitored, given the implications of its use, on human health. The present paper reviews the analytical techniques applied to sulfite quantification: titrimetric, spectrometric, chromatographic, electrochemical (voltammetric, amperometric, potentiometric). The methods are detailed with respect to their analytical performances (precision, accuracy, sensitivity), including modifi...

In this research, a modified electrode has been produced during the electropolymerization of 4-Aminobenzoic acid in the presence of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) and then Ni(II) ions were incorporated to the polymer by immersion of the modified electrode in a 0.1 M Ni(II) ions solution. The electrochemical behavior of Ni/poly(4-aminobenzoic acid)/sodium dodecylsulfate/carbon paste electrode (Ni/poly(4-AB)/SDS/CPE) was investigated by using cyclic voltammetry. The experimental results exhibited the...

Abstract This work reports on the electrochemical oxidation of sulfur dioxide on nitrogen-doped graphite (NG) in acidic media. The NG samples were prepared via one-step pyrolysis of the mixtures of sugar and urea at 700–1000 °C in argon atmosphere. Mechanism analysis indicated that the electrochemical oxidation reaction of sulfur dioxide on NG was irreversible and diffusion controlled. Moreover, the influence of pyrolysis temperature on the electrocatalytic activity of NG was also investigated. ...

A new flame-containing molecular emission cavity analysis (MECA) system was designed for the speciation of S2−, SO32−, SO42−, SCN−, and S2O32− in wastewater based on the catalytic properties of H+. For speciation of sulfur, SO32− and S2O32− were detected via the formation of SO2 during direct introduction to an air-bubbling Cu(II)/HNO3 and Al(III)/OH− solutions, respectively. Total quantity of SO32−, S2−, SO42−, and SCN− was also determined via introduction of the real sample to the other vessel...

We describe the modification of a glassy carbon electrode by electro-deposition of copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) in the presence of an amine-terminated dendrimer (PAMAM) as a template. The electrode containing the CuHCF template was cycled in alkaline solution to generate a layer of cupric oxide (CuO). The mechanism of the formation of CuO and its electrocatalytic activity were investigated by cyclic voltammetry. Scanning electron microscopy reveals that the CuO prepared by this method has a m...

In spite of the technical importance of detecting environmental SOx and NOx gases, a selective detection has not been realized because of their similar chemical properties. In this report, adsorption and desorption of SO2 and NO2 gas on carbon nanotubes are investigated in terms of different humidity levels at room temperature. A random-network single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) resistor is constructed by a dip-pen method using a SWCNT/dichloroethane (DCE) solution. In the case of SO2 gas ads...

A linear relationship between concentration of sulfur dioxide (SO2) and optical parameter (OP) is established using the Beer–Lambert law. The SO2 measuring system is set up to measure the concentration of sulfur dioxide in the wavelength range 275–315 nm. Experimental results indicate that the detection limit of the sulfur dioxide measuring system is below 0.2 ppm per meter of path length, and the measurement precision is better than ±1%. The proposed SO2 measuring method features limited interf...

Abstract The electrocatalytic oxidation of sulfite was investigated at carbon ionic liquid electrode (CILE). This electrode is a very good alternative to previously described electrodes because the electrocatalytic effect is achieved without any electrode modification. Comparative experiments were carried out using carbon paste electrode (CPE) and glassy carbon electrode (GCE). At CILE, highly reproducible and well-defined cyclic voltammograms were obtained for sulfite with a peak potential of 0...
