Abstract
Abstract A novel biodegradable nanocomposite was fabricated based on poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) and silane-modified kaolinite/silica core–shell nanoparticles (SMKS), via solution-casting method using chloroform as solvent. Unmodified (ORK) and glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (G-silane) surface-modified kaolin (SMK) were also introduced into PHBHHx matrix for comparison. SMKS significantly improved the mechanical properties of the PHBHHx compared to that of ORK and SMK. The composite filled with a low loading of SMKS increased the tensile strength and toughness from 18.2 to 23.5 MPa and 2.6 to 4.2 MPa, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicated that SMKS was finely distributed in the PHBHHx matrix compared with the other two kinds of fillers. These significant improvements in these mechanical properties were attributed to the fine dispersion of SMKS into the polymer and covalent interaction between polymer chains and the surface of SMKS.

Abstract Bacterial poly[( R )-3-hydroxybutyrate- co -( R )-3-hydroxyhexanoate] (PHBH) highly oriented films were prepared by the combination of roll and uniaxial drawing processes. The change in the higher-order structure of PHBH films was investigated by wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Extended films, which show superior mechanical properties and high ductility, have complicated structures. By roll extension, both deformed and undeformed spherulites ...

China clay (kaolin) has been modified with sodium salt of rubber seed oil (SRSO). SRSO was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and differential thermal analysis (DTA). XRD of the unmodified and SRSO-modified kaolins showed an increase in the d-(001) spacing of kaolin platelets from 7.15 to 14 A. FTIR spectroscopy indicated possible grafting of the organic moiety of rubber seed oil (RSO) onto the clay surface. DTA of the SRSO-modified kaolin indicated that t...

We investigated the effect of physical and chemical modifications of mica surfaces induced by water vapor-based plasma treatments on the stability of silanols and grafted alkylsilane monolayers. The plasma-activated substrates were characterized using XPS, TOF-SIMS, and contact angle measurements. They revealed a large surface coverage of silanol groups (Si−OH) and a loss of aluminum atoms compared to freshly cleaved mica surfaces. The stability of plasma-induced silanol groups was investigated ...

Sodium Montmorillonite (NaMMT) has been modified via cation exchange reaction using three different organic cations. Basal spacings, interlamellar structure and thermal stability of these organo-montmorillonites (OMMT) clays have been characterized using wide angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) techniques. Increase in the basal spacing due to organic modification is in good agreement with simple theoretical calculations based on van der Waals volume of the cationi...

The main shortcomings of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB), which is a biodegradable and biocompatible polymer used for biomedical and food packaging applications, are its low thermal stability, poor impact resistance and lack of antibacterial activity. This issue can be improved by blending with other biodegradable polymers such as polyhydroxyhexanoate to form poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx), which is a copolymer with better impact strength and lower melting point. However, PHBHH...

Abstract Amphiphilically modified kaolinite was produced by the modification of the octahedral surface of kaolinite with vinyltrimethoxysilane for use in the stabilization of Pickering emulsions. The covalent grafting of the hydrolysate of vinyltrimethoxysilane on the kaolinite octahedral surface resulted in kaolinite exhibiting dual-surface affinity. Further, the surface wettability of the modified kaolinite could be tuned by regulating the reaction temperature. Investigations of emulsions stab...
