The family Coccidae, or soft scales (Hemiptera: Coccoidea), is composed of about 1100 species in 160 genera(Ben-Dov et al. 2008). In Colombia, 35 species of soft scales have been recorded (Kondo 2001); 29% of thetotal number belong to the genus Ceroplastes Gray. Half of the Ceroplastes species in Colombia are endemicand were described by Felipe Mosquera Paris (Mosquera 1979, 1984). The species of Ceroplastes knownfrom Colombia are as follows: C. boyacensis Mosquera, C. bruneri Cockerell & Cocker...

Publisher Summary This chapter focuses on the sternorrhyncha, suborder of the order Hemiptera. It comprising some 16,000 described species and contains four major groups, all entirely phytophagous, and usually recognized as superfamilies: the Psylloidea (psylloids or jumping plant-lice); Aleyrodoidea (whitefl ies); Aphidoidea (aphids or aphidoids); and Coccoidea (scale insects or coccoids). Insects belonging to the Hemiptera are unique in having their mouthparts forming a rostrum that comprises ...

The adult female and first-instar nymph of a new species of iceryine scale insect, Crypticerya multicicatrices Kondo & Unruh sp. n., are described and illustrated. The new scale insect is polyphagous and was collected on 13 plant species distributed in seven botanical families, including fruit trees of economic importance such as mango and soursop. A taxonomic key to the species of the tribe Iceryini known from South America is provided. Previous records of C. brasiliensis (Hempel) from Colombia...

Many scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccoidea), including species of great economic importance, are associated with plants of the genus Citrus in citrus producing regions around the world. Revision and updating of lists of scale insect species based on field surveys contributes to improving their management and is an important tool for preventing their introduction into non-infested areas. The purpose of this study was to present an updated list of scale insect species in citrus orchards in Sao Paulo...

The Colombian fluted scale, Crypticerya multicicatrices Kondo and Unruh, is a polyphagous iceryine scale insect native to mainland (continental) Colombia and not known from other Central and South American countries. It has become a serious invasive pest on the islands of San Andres and Old Providence in the southwestern Caribbean State of Colombia, where probably it was introduced unintentionally with plants from mainland Colombia. Here we document the efforts that have been made to implement a...
