The ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The current SARS-CoV-2 vaccines are based on spike (S) protein, S1 subunit, or receptor-binding domain (RBD) of prototype strain. Emergence of several novel SARS-CoV-2 variants has raised concern about potential immune escape. In this study, we performed an immunogenicity comparison of ancestral RBD, S1, and S ectodomain trimer (S-trimer) antigens and tested the eff...

Mobile microRNAs (miRNAs) serve as local and long-distance signals in developmental patterning and stress responses in plants. However, mechanisms governing the non-cell autonomous activities of miRNAs remain elusive. Here, we show that mutations that disrupt microtubule dynamics are specifically defective for the non-cell autonomous actions of mobile miRNAs, including miR165/6 that is produced in the endodermis and moves to the vasculature to pattern xylem cell fates in Arabidopsis roots. We sh...

Accelerated evolution is often driven by the interaction between environmental factors and genes. However, it remains unclear whether accelerated evolution can be ignited. Here, we focused on adaptive events during the emergence of chorioallantoic placenta. We scanned the chromosome X and identified eight accelerated regions in the ancestral lineage of eutherian mammals. Five of these regions ( P =5.61×10 -11 ~ 9.03×10 -8 ) are located in the five exons of Nik-related kinase ( Nrk ), which is es...

Summary Norepinephrine (NE) is a key biogenic monoamine neurotransmitter involved in a wide range of physiological processes. However, its precise dynamics and regulation remain poorly characterized, in part due to limitations of available techniques for measuring NE in vivo. Here, we developed a family of GPCR activation-based NE (GRABNE) sensors with a 230% peak ΔF/F0 response to NE, good photostability, nanomolar-to-micromolar sensitivities, sub-second kinetics, and high specificity. Viral- o...

To systematically identify ubiquitin pathway genes that are critical to lung carcinogenesis, we used a genome-wide silencing method in this study to knockdown 696 genes in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cells. We identified 31 candidates that were required for cell proliferation in two NSCLC lines, among which the E2 ubiquitin conjugase CDC34 represented the most significant one. CDC34 was elevated in tumor tissues in 67 of 102 (65.7%) NSCLCs, and smokers had higher CDC34 than nonsmokers. Th...
