OBJECTIVE The growing opioid crisis increasingly affects maternal care in the US and it is unknown if opioid use puts pregnant women at increased odds for cesarean delivery (CD). Understanding how opioids influence CD trends is important in improving maternal and neonatal outcomes. This study aims to understand the association of opioid use with CD in the context of the demographic, clinical, behavioral, and health system complexity. METHODS This retrospective cross-sectional analysis used repre...

This study examined the correlation of cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (SctO2) and cerebral tissue fractional oxygen extraction (cFTOE) with gestational age (GA) and postnatal age over the first 28 days of life. Preterm infants with birth weight (BW) <1500 g were monitored with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) during the first 28 days of life. SctO2 and cFTOE measurements were analyzed using a linear mixed model. A total of 70 preterm infants were included. Mean SctO2 decreased with increasin...

Abstract Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis is a common condition which is routinely seen in the outpatient department, with a prevalence of 5% in general population. It is important to be able to make this diagnosis but more importantly exclude other causes of scoliosis by carrying out a thorough history and examination. This paper will cover the pathophysiology, presentation, examination, and surgical management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

OBJECTIVE Neuromuscular re-education (NMRE) therapy including bracing, containment, facilitation techniques, joint compression, weight (WT) bearing, and myofascial release has been shown to improve neurodevelopmental maturation in premature infants. This study aimed to examine the association of NMRE with growth parameters including WT and length (L) at 36 weeks postmenstrual age (PMA) and at discharge. STUDY DESIGN We analyzed data of infants <34 weeks gestational age (GA) or <1,800 g birth wei...

Purpose: In this study, we would like to describe a novel technique for subfascial insertion of magnetically controlled growing rods using chest drain during surgery for early-onset scoliosis. Materials and Methods: Posterior approach, surgical dissection to the spine is performed exposing the relevant anatomy to allow placement of pedicle screws always in the distal construct and pedicle screws or hooks in the proximal construct. To allow easy passage of the Magnetic Expansion Control (MAGEC) r...
