Abstract An enhancement of electromechanical performance in ferroelectric materials commonly requires a delicate control of compositions to the proximity of morphotropic phase boundary. Here, we demonstrate an alternative design strategy for enhanced electromechanical responses by engineering ferroelectric PbZr 1 − x Ti x O 3 nano-heterostructures, where the overall composition is near the morphotropic phase boundary yet compositions of constitutive layers are far from the boundary. Effects of l...

The advent of modern thin-film deposition approaches has ushered in a new era of designed materials with well-controlled composition distributions, e.g., compositionally graded ferroelectric (CGFE) thin films, and thereby, it is readily accessible CGFE/FM (ferromagnetic) multilayer thin films. Being recognized this emerging class of materials, in this study, we develop a phase-field model based on the Ginzburg–Landau theory that takes into account the gradient of ferroelectric (FE) compositions ...

Abstract In this study, electromechanical responses of BiFeO 3 /BaTiO 3 (BFO/BTO) (0-3) nanocomposites with different volume fractions of BFO nanoparticles are investigated using phase field model based on the Landau-Ginzburg theory. A rich phase coexistence, including tetragonal ( T ), orthorhombic ( O ), and rhombohedral ( R ) phases, is characteristically formed in the domain structure of the nanocomposite due to interactions between BFO nanoparticles and BTO matrix through the interfaces. In...

We report on numerical investigation of the electrocaloric effect, an important physical phenomenon in compositionally graded ferroelectric (CGFE) nanowires made of Pb ( 1 − x ) Sr x TiO 3 whose material compositions spatially vary along the longitudinal direction of nanowires. In this study, all numerical evidences are demonstrated through the phase field model based on the Ginzburg–Landau theory. Here, the change of polarization with temperature can be tailored by controlling the gradient of m...

Abstract Effect of chemical compositions in ferroelectric phase on magnetoelectric (ME) coupling is investigated for (3-1) multiferroic Pb(1−x)SrxTiO3/CoFe2O4 nanocomposites, via phase field model. The Sr content in ferroelectric phase varies in a wide range of 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.4. Stripe polarization domain structure is stably formed in the ferroelectric matrix, while rectilinear magnetization domain appears in each ferromagnetic nanowire. Average sizes of polarization domains strongly depend on the Sr...

Abstract A reversal of polarization vortexlike domains in ferroelectric nanostructures plays important roles for next generations of electronic nanodevices. However, a direct switching of the polarization vortexlike domains in ferroelectrics is a nontrivial task since the toroidal moment is conjugated to a curled electric field rather than a homogeneous one. This work is dedicated to developing an approach to directly switch the toroidal ordering under an irrotational (homogeneous) electric fiel...

Practical control of polarization vortices in ferroelectric nanostructures could plays an important role in next-generation nanoscale electronic devices. However, switching vortex polarization is quite challenging, never mind via mechanical methods. This study identifies deterministic switching of vortex chirality in a compositionally graded ferroelectric nanoplate under compressive stress, using phase-field simulations and ferroelectric instability analysis. In addition, the underlying mechanis...
