A donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) chromophore, 2-amino-4-(9-ethyl-9H-carbazol-3-yl)-8-methoxy-5,6-dihydrobenzo[h]quinoline-3-carbonitrile (AEDQ) was synthesized from the condensation of 6-methoxy-3,4-dihydronaphthalen-1(2H)-one, 9-ethyl-9H-carbazole-3-carbaldehyde, malononitrile and NH4OAc in ethanol. Abstract The new extended π-bond pyrazoline derivative (ENTD) was prepared from heterocyclic chalcone with 2-hydrazinylbenzo[d] thiazole. This review article describes the work reported on the separation and analysis of heavy metal ions by different modes of thin-layer chromatography (TLC) such as soil, micellar, and reversed-phase TLC during 2000–2019. The history of different modes of TLC has been briefly mentioned. The literature survey reveals that the number of papers reported during 2000–2019 on the separation of heavy metal ions by different modes of TLC follows the trend: micellar TLC > soil TLC > reversed-phase TLC.
