This paper examines theoretically the stress distribution around fiber breaks in a unidirectional reinforced metal matrix composite, subjected to axial loading when plastic yielding of the matrix is allowed to occur. The composites considered have a ductile interphase, bonding the matrix to the fiber. The likelihood of failure of a fiber adjacent to the existing broken fiber is considered.
