Ventriculitis is a rare, serious complication of neurosurgery. A 59-year-old man who had undergone a craniotomy for a paranasal adenocarcinoma, developed a right frontal cystic lesion. We performed a bifrontal craniotomy to remove the lesion. The dura was repaired with non-vascularized free fascia lata in watertight fashion. Ventriculitis occurred 3 days postoperatively. Ventricular drainage, craniectomy, and endoscopic irrigation were undertaken to remove an abscess. The dura and the resection ...

Glioblastoma (GBM) is the most lethal primary brain tumor characterized by significant cellular heterogeneity, namely tumor cells, including GBM stem-like cells (GSCs) and differentiated GBM cells (DGCs), and non-tumor cells such as endothelial cells, vascular pericytes, macrophages, and other types of immune cells. GSCs are essential to drive tumor progression, whereas the biological roles of DGCs are largely unknown. In this study, we focused on the roles of DGCs in the tumor microenvironment....

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women worldwide, and the main cause of death in patients with breast cancer is metastasis. Metastasis to the central nervous system occurs in 10% to 16% of patients with metastatic breast cancer, and this rate has increased because of recent advancements in systemic chemotherapy. Because of the various treatments available for brain metastasis, accurate diagnosis and evaluation for treatment are important. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one ...

Glioblastoma (GBM) is characterized by extensive tumor cell invasion, angiogenesis, and proliferation. We previously established subclones of GBM cells with distinct invasive phenotypes and identified annexin A2 (ANXA2) as an activator of angiogenesis and perivascular invasion. Here, we further explored the role of ANXA2 in regulating phenotypic transition in GBM. We identified oncostatin M receptor (OSMR) as a key ANXA2 target gene in GBM utilizing microarray analysis and hierarchical clusterin...

Malignant glioma is one of the most common brain cancers in humans, which is very devastating. The expression of reduced expression in immortalized cells/Dickkopf-3 (REIC/Dkk-3) is decreased in various human cancers. Lately, we have developed a novel second-generation adenoviral vector that expresses REIC/Dkk-3 (Ad-SGE-REIC) and revealed its antiglioma efficacy. The present investigator-initiated clinical trial is a single-arm, prospective, nonrandomized, noncomparative, open-label, single-cente...

Abstract Background Cavernous malformation of the anterior visual pathway is rare, especially in pregnant woman. Planning a treatment strategy with cross-disciplinary specialists is important. Case description A 27-year-old pregnant woman presented with acute hemorrhage around the right optic nerve and chiasm, manifesting as poor vision in both eyes. Examination revealed right-eye deteriorated acuity and bilateral temporal hemianopsia. Computed tomography showed an oval high-density mass in the ...

INTRODUCTION Expression of the gene encoding reduced expression in immortalized cells/Dickkopf-3 (REIC/Dkk-3) was reported to be reduced in a variety of human cancer cells. We previously examined the antitumor effect of an adenoviral vector carrying REIC/Dkk-3 gene (Ad-CAG-REIC). Recently, a novel adenoviral vector expressing REIC/Dkk-3 has also been developed based on the cytomegalovirus promoter-driven super gene expression system (Ad-SGE-REIC). We evaluated the anti-glioma effect of the Ad-SG...
