Abstract Although the fiber reinforced thermoplastic plastics (FRTP) materials has been widely applied in the automotive industry for non-load-bearing or semi-load-bearing parts, they are hardly used in load-bearing parts due to higher performance requirements. This paper focuses on an integrated design method for automotive load-bearing parts by using assembled continuous-FRTP laminates and non-continuous-FRTP materials (referred to as AFRTP). First, aiming for the lightest weight, an integrate...

Abstract The mechanical performance of continuous large tow carbon fiber reinforced polyamide 6 laminates fabricated by hot press molding was studied using quasi-static and dynamic tests. The effects of layup, strain rate and high temperature were discussed. The results show that the thermoplastic composites possess strain rate strengthening effects and high temperature weakening dependence. Different layup laminates exhibit different sensitivities. The elastic modulus difference of unidirection...

Abstract Metal polymer hybrid technology is a promising way of automotive weight reduction and safety improvement. In this study, high strength steel and glass-fiber reinforced PA66 composite were integrated by direct injection molding process. The mechanical properties and failure behavior of steel/composite hybrids under tension, bending, mode I and II fracture loads were investigated experimentally, theoretically and numerically. The properties of the interface between steel and composite wer...

Abstract Glass fiber aluminium laminate (GLARE) is a kind of fiber metal laminates widely applied in aircraft structures, frequently subjected to low-velocity impact incidents. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the dynamic response and damage mechanism characterization of GLARE under single and repeated low-velocity impacts. Firstly, a progressive degradation finite element (FE) model was developed and validated. Three different failure criteria were compared to analyze the damage beha...

Abstract Multi-material hybrid application is an effective way of automotive weight reduction. This paper proposes and validates a direct injection-molding adhesion process for polymer composite–metal hybrid (PMH) materials to overcome several limitations of existing PMH technologies. The fundamental tension and bending properties of PMH materials are investigated by experiments. The force–displacement curves of PMH coupons present a multi-stage feature, which is the cumulative results of two co...
