ABSTRACT The development of ultrastrong maraging stainless steels (MSSs) is always in high demand. However, traditional high-strength MSSs generally exhibit early plastic instability with a low uniform strain since the precipitated nanoparticles are non-coherent with the body-centered-cubic (BCC) lath martensitic matrix. Here, we design a novel ultrahigh strength MSS (Fe-5.30Cr-13.47Ni-3.10Al-1.22Mo-0.50W-0.23Nb-0.03C-0.005B, wt. %) using a cluster formula approach. A fabulous microstructure con...

Herein, a facile method to develop luminescent PS/AA/Rare-Earth-doped composites was presented. The PS/AA microspheres were first carried out via one-pot dispersion polymerization. Then, the PS/AA microspheres bearing free carboxyl groups were used as templates for surface chemical deposition of rare earth ions forming lanthanide-based nanocrystal-doped PS/AA composites. The morphologies and structures of resulting composites were characterized by SEM, TEM, FT-IR, TGA, and XPS. The photoluminesc...

Refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) with body-centered-cubic (BCC) structure are a new class of alloy materials and have great potential for high temperature applications. The present work investigated the BCC structural stabilities of Ti-Zr-Nb-Hf RHEAs with both first-principles calculations and experimental characterization. The cluster-plus-glue-atom model (cluster model) for the presentation of chemical short-range ordering (CSRO) in solid solutions was applied to construct the model inpu...

We demonstrate an optical phased array that consists of two subarrays based on the silicon on insulator (SOI) platform, each subarray including 16 independent channels. The demonstrated field of view of the optical phased array is 36.6∘×32.6∘ with a spot size of 1.68∘×0.0673∘. A steering range of 32.6° is achieved by combining two subarrays with different periods and tuning the wavelength from 1500 nm to 1600 nm. In another dimension, the steering is realized by introducing phase differences bet...

Abstract The present work proposed a characteristic-parameter-embedded machine learning (ML) model to predict and design body-centered-cubic (BCC) γ-U alloys with high corrosion-resistant lifetime in 343 °C boiling water in U-Mo-Nb-Ti-Zr systems. The characteristic parameters of cluster formula approach and Mo equivalence (Moeq) were implemented into the ML for a more accurate prediction, in which the former reflects the interactions among elements and determines their added amounts and the latt...

The present work investigated the formation and mechanical behavior of body-centered-cubic (BCC) Zr(Hf)-Nb-Ti medium entropy alloys (MEAs), in which three series of alloys, [Zr-Zr14](Zr,Nb)3, [Ti-Zr14](Ti,Nb)3, and [Ti-(Hf,Zr)14](Nb)3, were designed by the cluster formula approach. With increasing the Nb content, the BCC-β structural stability of the [Zr-Zr14](Zr,Nb)3 alloys would be enhanced, as evidenced by the BCC [Zr-Zr14](Nb)3 (Zr83.33Nb16.67 in atomic percent at. pct) alloy containing a mi...

Abstract A high-efficiency suspended three-tip edge coupler based on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform for fiber-to-chip coupling in Mid-infrared (MIR) region is designed. The device is composed of a three-tip edge coupler and subwavelength grating (SWG) waveguides. The edge coupler is suspended in order to avoid the high absorption loss from the Silicon dioxide (SiO2) in the SOI substrate in MIR. The three tips of the suspended edge coupler increase the coupling between the optical field in...

Each conventional alloy has its own specific compositions but the compositional origin is largely unknown due to our insufficient understanding about chemical short-range ordering in the alloy, in particular, in the solid-solution state. In the present paper, the compositions of metallic alloys are discussed and formulated, by unveiling the basic moleculelike structural units in solid solutions. Friedel oscillation theory, which describes the partial charge screening behavior in solid solutions,...

Abstract The effects of the Cr content on microstructure, corrosion behavior, and mechanical properties of the Al0.3CrxFeCoNi high-entropy alloys (HEAs) were studied. The Al0.3CrxFeCoNi alloys with x = 0–1.0 exhibited the single face-centered-cubic (FCC) structure, and the alloys with x = 1.5–2.0 consisted of the FCC and disordered body-centered-cubic (BCC)/ordered BCC (B2) structure. In the 3.5 mass% NaCl solution, the Al0.3CrxFeCoNi alloys are spontaneously passivated, and the pitting resistan...
