This second total diet study (TDS) in Taiwan was initiated to assess the health risk posed on general consumers from the dietary intake of benzoic acid and sorbic acid as an illustration of a risk assessment of food preservatives. Health risk was assessed by estimating the ratio of the exposure level to the acceptable daily intake (ADI) level of an analyte. This ratio, known as the hazard index (HI), must be less than 100% to ensure no health risk of concern. The ADI values were obtained from th...

BACKGROUND/AIM: Evidence exists that oxidative stress and oxidative damage play a pivotal role in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPCs) extracted from grape seeds have been shown to exhibit antioxidant capabilities greater than those of vitamin C and E. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of OPCs on antioxidant status and lung function in patients with COPD. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients were supplemented with 150 mg/day OPC (n=13)...

BACKGROUND/AIM: This study aimed to examine the effects of nutritional intervention on the prognosis of patients with cardiopulmonary failure undergoing extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy in Taiwan. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An institutional review board-approved retrospective study was conducted on patients receiving ECMO therapy in the intensive care unit of the China Medical University Hospital, Taiwan, from January 2013 to December 2013. The study included 102 patients with card...

Abstract The purpose of this study was to assess the health risk associated with dietary intake of sulfites for Taiwanese general consumers by conducting a total diet study (TDS). We evaluated the exposure of Taiwanese to sulfites in the diet and its associated health risk. This study used a list of 128 food items representing 83% of the total daily diet. Among the 128 food items, 59 items may contain sulfites. Samples of the 59 food items were collected and subjected to chemical analysis to det...

The protective effects of encapsulation on the survival of Lactobacillus reuteri and the retention of the bacterium’s probiotic properties under simulated gastrointestinal conditions were investigated. Viable counts and the remaining probiotic properties of calcium (Ca)-alginate encapsulated (A group), chitosan-Ca-alginate encapsulated (CA group), and unencapsulated, free L. reuteri (F group) were determined. Encapsulation improved the survival of L. reuteri subjected to simulated gastrointestin...

The purpose was to assess the health risk to general consumers in Taiwan associated with dietary intake of benzoic acid and sorbic acid by conducting a total diet study (TDS). The hazard index (HI) in percent acceptable daily intake (%ADI) of benzoic acid and sorbic acid for eight exposure groups classified by age were calculated. In high-intake consumers, the highest HI of benzoic acid was 54.1%ADI for males aged 1–2 years old at the 95th percentile, whereas for females, the HI was 61.7%ADI for...

Abstract The potential probiotic properties of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) after treatment with gastrointestinal (GI) conditions were investigated. Some LAB strains that survived simulated GI treatment retained their adhesiveness and antagonism against the pathogen. Therefore pre-challenging LAB with simulated GI conditions is a suitable way for potential probiotic studies.

Chrysophanol (1,8-dihydroxy-3-methylanthraquinone) is one of the anthraquinone compounds, and it has been shown to induce cell death in different types of cancer cells. The effects of chrysophanol on human lung cancer cell death have not been well studied. The purpose of this study is to examine chrysophanol-induced cytotoxic effects and also to investigate such influences that involved apoptosis or necrosis in A549 human lung cancer cells in vitro. Our results indicated that chrysophanol decrea...

Abstract Objective The association between serum iron status, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and all-cause mortality remains controversial in the elderly. In the present study, we aim to determine the relevance of serum iron level on the incidences of CVD and all-cause mortality in an elderly population. Methods A baseline cohort of 336 participants, aged ≥65 y, was recruited from eight long-term care facilities between 2002 and 2003. The degree of iron deficiency was defined based on the serum i...
