Refactoring helps to improve the design of software systems, making them more readable, maintainable, cleaner, and easy to expand. Most of the tools that already exist on this concept allow developers to select and execute the best refactoring techniques for a particular programming context. However, they aren’t interactive and prompt enough, providing a poor programming experience. In this gap, we can introduce and combine the topic of liveness with refactoring methods. Live Refactoring allows ...

Caffeic acid (CA) has demonstrated a strong intracellular antioxidant ability by scavenging ROS, contributing to the maintenance of cell membrane structural integrity and to reduce oxidative injuries in other cell components. Nevertheless, caffeic acid has limited usage, due to its hydrophilic character. In this work, the introduction of alkyl chains in the caffeic acid molecule by esterification (methyl - C1, ethyl - C2, butyl - C4, hexyl - C6, octyl - C8 and hexadecyl - C16), significantly inc...

The consumption of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) has been associated with a lower incidence of cardiovascular diseases partly due to its polyphenol content. The metabolites hydroxytyrosol sulfate and hydroxytyrosol acetate sulfate were shown to be the most concentrated polyphenol metabolites found in plasma after EVOO consumption. Therefore, the capacity of hydroxytyrosol, hydroxytyrosol acetate, homovanillyl alcohol, homovanillyl alcohol acetate and tyrosol sulfate metabolites, to protect red b...

Abstract The sensitization activity of four zinc metalloporphyrin dyes: meso-tetrakis(4-pyridyl)porphyrinato Zn(II) (a), meso-triphenyl-(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrinato Zn(II) (b), meso-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrinato Zn(II) (c) and meso-tripyridyl(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrinato Zn(II) (d) is reported here, in terms of current-potential curve, open-circuit potential, fill factor, and overall solar energy conversion efficiency which have been evaluated under 100 mW/cm2 light intensity and their ...

With the increasing complexity of software systems, software developers would benefit from instant and continuous feedback about the system they are maintaining and evolving. Despite existing several solutions providing feedback and suggesting improvements, many tools require explicit invocations, leading developers to miss some improvement opportunities, such as important refactorings, due to the loss of their train of thought. Therefore, to address these limitations, we developed a Visual Stud...

This work proposes a simple and easy-to-use flow-through system for the implementation of dynamic extractions, aiming at the evaluation of bioaccessible zinc and the characterization of leaching kinetics in dry dog food samples. The kinetic profile of Zn extraction was determined by flame atomic absorption spectroscopy and the results were fitted in an exponential function (R2 > 0.960) compatible with a two first-order reactions model. Values of fast leachable Zn ranged from 83 ± 1 to 313 ± 5 mg...

In recent years robots have been used as a tool for teaching purposes, motivating the development of fully virtual environments for combined real/simulated robotics teaching. The AlphaBot2 Raspberry Pi (RPi), a robot used for education, has no currently available simulator. A Gazebo simulator was produced and a ROS framework was implemented for hardware abstraction and control of low-level modules facilitating students control of the robot’s physical behaviours in the real and simulated robot, s...

This paper presents an Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM) students’ union, JELA, that was born at University of Aveiro (UA), Portugal. JELA is a junior lean company, with the purpose to provide its members with an opportunity to acquire valuable knowledge and competencies during their graduation in the Lean Management (LM) system, in cooperation with the IEM-UA teachers. The objective of this paper is to explore how JELA and such a kind of students’ union, fully committed to the develop...

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) combines a photosensitizer (PS) with the physical energy of non-ionizing light to trigger cell death pathways. PDT has potential as a therapeutic modality to be used in alternative or in combination with other conventional cancer treatment protocols (e.g. surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy). Still, due to the lack of specificity of the current PSs to target the tumor cells, several studies have exploited their conjugation with targeting moieties. PSs conjugated wit...

Abstract Tranexamic acid (TXA) is an antifibrinolytic drug, with the ability to inhibit lysine binding at plasminogen receptors, used in adult trauma patients with on-going or at risk of significant haemorrhage. To understand the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of this drug in variable age groups undergoing surgeries with high blood loss, effective methods for determination of TXA in biological samples at sub-μg mL −1 are still required. We describe herein the development and validation of...
