Abstract A considerable reduction of background and an improvement of spectra of low-energy γ -rays, measured with a planar high-purity Ge detector, has been achieved using a small source and a careful design of collimators and shielding. The aim of the design was to reduce strongly the detection of scattered radiation. A review of results of the new method for measuring the Compton scattering on bound electrons in germanium, introduced by the presented authors, is given. A study was made of the continuum adjacent to the Kα1 and Kα2 peaks (the ‘shoulder’) in lanthanum fluorescence spectra. The fluorescence was induced by 59.537 keV γ-rays from a 241Am source. Abstract An extension of the previous study of germanium-detector response function for 59.537 keV γ -rays has been made.
