We present experimental data on water repetitively brought in contact with cellophane. Although this hydrophilic polymer is insoluble in water, repetitively immersing it in water changes the liquid’s properties. We compare the physicochemical properties of the water left over after removing the cellophane to those of previously published data on water repetitively brought in contact with other in water insoluble polymers (cotton wool or Nafion). Some of the properties are similar. All the proper...

Rare earth elements (REEs) are key constituents of modern technology and play important roles in various chemical and industrial applications. They also are increasingly used in agricultural and zootechnical applications, such as fertilizers and feed additives. Early applications of REEs in agriculture have originated in China over the past several decades with the objective of increasing crop productivity and improving livestock yield (e.g., egg production or piglet growth). Outside China, REE ...

Abstract null null In Mediterranean areas, fires are accelerators of soil degradation and the definition of the time extent to re-establish the soil community is a great challenge. The aims of the research were to evaluate, during two years after a fire: i) the potential recover of the soil abiotic properties; ii) the stability (resistance or resilience) of the soil microbial community; iii) the potential role of different plant covers on soil recover capability. To reach the aims, soil properti...

Retinitis pigmentosa (RP) is a group of mitochondrial diseases characterized by progressive degeneration of rods and cones leading to retinal loss of light sensitivity and, consequently, to blindness. To date, no cure is available according to the clinical literature. As a disease associated with pigmentation-related, pro-oxidant state, and mitochondrial dysfunction, RP may be viewed at the crossroads of different pathogenetic pathways involved in adverse health outcomes, where mitochondria play...

Selectivity and efficacy towards target cancer cells, as well as biocompatibility, are current challenges of advanced chemotherapy powering the discovery of unconventional metal-based drugs and the search for novel therapeutic approaches. Among second-generation metal-based chemotherapeutics, ruthenium complexes have demonstrated promising anticancer activity coupled to minimal toxicity profiles and peculiar biochemical features. In this context, our research group has recently focused on a bioa...

The aim of this study was to compare the relative nutritional benefit of edible Malaysian fishes from the coast of Terengganu in Malaysia, as well as to perform a taxonomical characterization and metal assessment. Discrimination between species was carried out by a morphological and molecular approach by evaluating the total concentrations of metals by ICP-MS analyses and the fatty acids (FA) composition using the GC–MS approach on the fish fillet tissues. The taxonomical studies detected fishes...

The microbiological monitoring of mineral bottled waters results is crucial for the prevention of outbreaks in consumers. European and International regulations establish the quality of water intended for human consumption in order to preserve human health from the negative effects deriving from water contamination. Advanced methods targeting the faster detection of potential pathogens in drinking water may consent to the creation of an early warning system, enhancing water quality management. T...

Abstract null null Significant release of rare earth elements (REEs) into the environment is mainly due to active or abandoned mining sites, but their presence is globally increasing due to their use in several industrial sectors. The effects on primary producers as Raphidocelis subcapitata are still limited. This research focused on La and Ce as the two most widespread REEs that can be currently found up to hundreds of μg/L in water and wastewater. Microalgae were exposed to La and Ce for 3 day...

The spatial distribution of trace elements in surface sediments of the Hooghly estuary was studied over the monsoons in 2014–2017. As, Cd, Ni, Pb and U were two- to sixteen-fold the crust means with increasing levels toward the estuary, with Ni peak during the post-monsoon. Pearson’s correlation matrix, cluster analysis, enrichment factors and pollution index revealed the anthropic source and association of trace elements with Fe, Mn and Al and of Pb with U. Geoaccumulation index revealed for Ni...
