This paper explores the collective pursuit of quasi-scientific knowledge practices as a consumption activity. By empirically analyzing the highly-specialized collective practice of game-breaking we grant insights into consumption collectives constituting knowledge systems. We show that the collective explorative endeavor of epistemic consumption relegates the aesthetic dimension of collective consumption to the backstage. By uncovering knowledge pathways, this study sheds light on the structurin...
We empirically re-inquire the nature of the commodity based on a multi-year ethnographic research into a consumption community centered on designing, building and using material objects, namely racing drones. Where prior literature has framed commodities and craft objects as antagonistic and mutually exclusive, objectual practice in this community centers on knowledge practices that combine and explore assemblages of both. ABSTRACTBuilding theory with ethnography and filmic research increasingly requires focussing on key practices or settings, instead of painting a broad panorama of a culture. But few authors discuss why and how to focus. This article provides a systematic discussion of the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of focusing ethnographic research by comparing different schools of thought and suggesting a practice theory-based approach. It argues that many research projects are focused but do ...

Because knowledge, subjects, power, and value are social accomplishments, they are neither fixed nor without alternativ...
