AIM To analyse the additional clinical value of protocol-driven and selective use of multidetector single-photon-emission tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) in oncology patients undergoing whole-body bone scintigraphy (BS) and to analyse reporter confidence in diagnosis with and without SPECT/CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS During a 1-year period, 2,954 whole-body BS examinations were performed in oncology patients, with 444 (15%) undergoing additional protocol-driven SPECT/CT. Retrospective ev...

BACKGROUND: 23-seleno-25-homo-tauro-cholic acid (SeHCAT) scanning to rule out bile acid diarrhea (BAD) in patients with chronic diarrhea has a high yield. Our previous study showed that patients with terminal ileal (TI) Crohn's disease, TI resection, or cholecystectomy were highly likely to have an abnormal scan. As a result, we encouraged clinicians to use a therapeutic trial of a bile acid sequestrant in these patients, instead of scanning. This may have reduced diagnostic yield of the test, s...

: A 30-year-old woman presented with lethargy, night sweats, and fever with raised inflammatory markers. Anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody was negative. Abdominopelvic CT was unremarkable. Subsequently, she underwent FDG PET/CT showing globally enlarged kidneys with diffuse hypermetabolic activity within the renal parenchyma bilaterally. Renal biopsies showed morphologic features of an active necrotizing crescentic glomerulonephritis, which was confirmed clinically and treated. This case demo...

Aim To evaluate the clinical impact of combined 2-[ 18 F]-fluoro-2-deoxy-d-glucose (FDG) positron-emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) brain imaging performed in selected patients with cognitive impairment at a tertiary referral centre in the UK, and to assess the accuracy of FDG PET/CT to correctly establish the diagnosis of Alzheimer's dementia (AD) in "real-world" clinical practice. Methods and materials Using an institutional radiology database, 136 patients were identified for i...

Abstract Aims To investigate the use of image co-registration in incorporating diagnostic positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) directly into the radiotherapy treatment planning pathway, and to describe the pattern of local recurrence relative to the PET-avid volume. Materials and methods Fourteen patients were retrospectively identified, six of whom had local recurrence. The accuracy of deformable image registration (DIR) and rigid registration of the diagnostic PET-CT and r...

Aim To analyse the positive rate for cancer on additional abdominopelvic computed tomography (CT) in patients with unprovoked venous thromboembolism (VTE), evaluate the subsequent emergence of a cancer diagnosis in the clinical follow-up period, and identify any possible predictive factors of cancer in this cohort, which may allow better selection of patients for additional imaging. Materials and methods Consecutive adult patients with VTE were retrospectively identified in two large teaching ho...
