Most Crohn's disease-associated small bowel carcinomas (CrD-SBCs) are diagnosed in advanced stage and have poor prognosis. To improve diagnosis and therapy, a better knowledge of tumour precancerous lesions, histotypes and prognostic factors is needed. We investigated histologically and immunohistochemically 52 CrD-SBCs and 51 small bowel carcinomas unrelated to inflammatory disease, together with their tumour-associated mucosa, looking for Crohn-selective changes. Histologic patterns and phenot...

BACKGROUND: Little information is available concerning prognostic factors of bronchopulmonary large cell neuroendocrine carcinomas (BP-LCNECs) and even less is known about combined LCNECs (Co-LCNECs). We investigated whether an integrated morphological, immunohistochemical and molecular approach could be used for their prognostic evaluation. METHODS: Morphological (including combined features), proliferative (mitotic count/Ki-67 index), immunohistochemical (napsin A, p-40, TTF-1, CD44, OTP, SSTR...

Neuroendocrine neoplasms of the small intestine are some of the most frequently occurring along the gastrointestinal tract, even though their incidence is extremely variable according to specific sites. Jejunal-ileal neuroendocrine neoplasms account for about 27% of gastrointestinal NETs making them the second most frequent NET type. The aim of this review is to classify all tumors following the WHO 2019 classification and to describe their pathologic differences and peculiarities.

Colorectal rhabdoid carcinomas (CRbCs) are very rare and aggressive cancers. The BRAF mutation and CpG island methylator phenotype have been reported to be common features of CRbCs. This study reviews the literature about CRbCs and analyzes the clinicopathological and molecular profiles of seven CRbCs characterized by large discohesive cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm, showing hyaline inclusions and large rounded to bean-shaped nuclei. For comparison, we included four poorly differenti...

Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH)-secreting lung carcinoids represent the principal cause of ectopic Cushing syndrome, but the prevalence of ACTH expression and the association between ACTH production and Cushing syndrome in lung carcinoids have scarcely been investigated. In addition, available information on the prognostic meaning of ACTH production is controversial. The aims of this multicentric retrospective study, also including a review of the literature, were to describe the clinico-path...
Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) of the minor papilla/ampulla (MIPA) are rare and poorly studied. Only individual case reports and no comprehensive analysis are available from the literature. We collected 16 MIPA NETs and investigated their clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features, including m

Abstract Background Approximately 10% of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) cases will harbor the BRAF p.V600E mutation (BRAF-mCRC) and have been associated with a poor prognosis. Although they are usually considered a unique clinical entity, biologic heterogeneity has been described. We performed an extensive clinicopathologic study of a multicenter series of BRAF-mCRC to highlight differences between tumors with microsatellite instability (MSI) and microsatellite stable tumors, focusing on bo...

e15695Background: Mixed adeno-neuroendocrine carcinomas (MANECs) are very rare malignancies. Due to their biological and clinical heterogeneity, there is not a universally shared clinical approach....

BACKGROUND: Gastric neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are very heterogeneous, ranging from mostly indolent, atrophic gastritis-associated, type I neuroendocrine tumors (NETs), through highly malignant, poorly differentiated neuroendocrine carcinomas (pdNECs), to sporadic type III NETs with intermediate prognosis, and various rare tumor types. Histologic differentiation, proliferative grade, size, level of gastric wall invasion, and local or distant metastases are used as prognostic markers. Howeve...

e15624Background: BRAFV600E mutation occurs in less than 10% of colorectal cancers (BmutCRCs) and is a strong predictor of poor prognosis not only in metastatic setting. Although BmutCRCs are usual...
