Tiny mismatches in timing, phase, and/or amplitude between in-phase (I) and quadrature (Q) tributaries in an electro-optic IQ modulator, namely IQ imbalance, can severely affect high baud-rate and/or high modulation-order signals in modern coherent optical communications systems. To maintain such analog impairment within the tight penalty limit over wavelength and temperature during the product lifetime, in-service in-field monitoring and calibration of the IQ imbalance, including its frequency ...

A dual-wavelength digital RoF link was experimentally demonstrated by OSR-reduced 2-bit delta-sigma modulated 32-QAM OFDM. The optically generated data was transmitted over 25-km SMF at receiving power of -9.9 dBm.

We demonstrate the first fiber–radio–fiber system in beyond 90 GHz using low loss optical modulator and direct photonic down-conversion. We successfully transmitted 32-/64-QAM OFDM and single-carrier signal with a record line rate of 71.4 Gb/s and net data rate of 53.7 Gb/s.

This Letter proposes a high-performance radio-over-fiber (RoF) system for high-speed and high-fidelity analog waveform transmission of radio signals in the millimeter-wave band in the uplink direction. At the antenna site, the system utilizes a newly fabricated low half-wave voltage broadband phase modulator to convert a millimeter-wave radio signal into an optical signal. At the receiver, by using photonic downconversion and optical filtering technology, a simple direct detection and downconver...

We demonstrate a high-fidelity seamless fiber– wireless system in the W band for high-precision analog waveform transmission. The system is realized using a stable radio-over-fiber transmission and a direct receiver in the W band. Satisfactory performance was experimentally confirmed for 512- and 1024-quadrature amplitude modulation orthogonal frequency division multiplexing signals, showing that the seamless system can provide precise analog waveform transmission of radio-wave signals in future...

We report the development of a superconducting acousto-optic phase modulator fabricated on a lithium niobate substrate. A titanium-diffused optical waveguide is placed in a surface acoustic wave resonator, where the electrodes for mirrors and an interdigitated transducer are made of a superconducting niobium titanium nitride thin film. The device performance is evaluated as a substitute for the current electro-optic modulators, with the same fiber coupling scheme and comparable device size. Oper...

An optically-controlled reconfigurable NRI-TL metamaterial phase shifter operating at 3.6 GHz is proposed. A host transmission line with a fixed length loaded with series capacitors and shunt inductors is used to achieve reconfigurability, while the optical control is introduced by integrating highly resistive silicon switches within the shunt branches of the NRI-TL design. The two states of the phase shifter result in a phase shift of ±60° leading to a differential phase shift of 120° with an i...
