ABSTRACT In this study, we investigated an Au–Pt/Al2O3 bimetallic catalyst prepared by a conventional deposition–precipitation method for the production of the high-value carboxylic acids glyceric acid and lactic acid from glycerol using liquid-phase flow reactor. Also, the distribution of the products was significantly different from the previously reported Au monometallic catalyst. A long-term (>1000 min) catalytic activity test at 358 K using a liquid-phase flow reactor, which is a common typ...

Hydrogenolysis of the furan rings of furfural and furfuryl alcohol, which can be obtained from biomass, has attracted attention as a method for obtaining valuable chemicals such as 1,2-pentanediol. In this study, we examined the hydrogenolysis of furfuryl alcohol to 1,2-pentanediol over Pd/C, Pt/C, Rh/C, and various supported Ru catalysts in several solvents. In particular, we investigated the effects of combinations of solvents and supports on the reaction outcome. Of all the tested combination...

Valorization of lignocellulosic biomass is expected to contribute to the realization of a carbon–neutral, sustainable society. In our previous work, a charcoal-supported Pt catalyst was found to be more active than other charcoal-supported metal catalysts (Rh, Pd, and Ru) for the conversion of Japanese cedar to aromatic monomers in supercritical water (yield = 17.4%). Here, we examined the effects of different support materials (i.e., active carbon, alumina, zirconia, and titania) to improve the...

Although chitin, an N-acetyl-D-glucosamine polysaccharide, can be converted to valuable products by means of homogeneous catalysis, most of the chitin generated by food processing is treated as industrial waste. Thus, a method for converting this abundant source of biomass to useful chemicals, such as lactic acid, would be beneficial. In this study, we determined the catalytic activities of various metal oxides for chitin conversion at 533 K and found that MgO showed the highest activity for lac...

Alcoholysis of benzyl phenyl ether to various aromatic compounds was studied in high-temperature aqueous methanol solution under high-pressure carbon dioxide conditions. The products formed included benzyl methyl ether, benzyl alcohol, phenol and toluene. As high as 70.7 ± 0.2% yield of monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with 16.1 ± 0.3% yield of benzyl methyl ether was obtained by treating benzyl phenyl ether with an aqueous solution with 0.2 molar fraction of methanol, under 17.7 MPa carbon dioxi...

Abstract Graphite-supported platinum catalysts (Pt/G) were highly active for the hydrogenolysis of benzofuran to o-ethylphenol in aqueous ethanol solution at 523 K without using any external hydrogen gas. The hydrogenolysis activities and selectivity to o-ethylphenol in ethanol solution over Pt/G were higher than those with a conventional method using externally supplied hydrogen gas. Both water and ethanol were indispensable for the hydrogenolysis in aqueous ethanol solution at 523 K.

Glycerol can be effectively converted to glyceric acid, a high value‐added pharmaceutical raw material, through its partial oxidation over an Au/Al2O3 catalyst under strongly basic conditions. The factors important for the highly selective production of glyceric acid were investigated experimentally. It was clarified that NaOH was involved in the glycerol activation step to a glycerol alkoxide intermediate (2, 3‐dihydroxypropoxide) in the liquid phase, then glyceric acid was formed by OOH specie...
