Human alcohol-consumption behavior is partly genetically encoded. The alcohol consumption of 987 residents in Keelung, Taiwan, was evaluated by using the Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test (AUDIT). We assessed ~750,000 genomic variants of 71 residents who drank hazardously (AUDIT score ≥ 8) and 126 residents who did not drink in their daily lives (AUDIT score = 0), using high-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) arrays. The rs671 G > A manifests the highest significance of the asso...

Associations between hepatitis C virus (HCV) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) have been reported; however, differences of renal progression between general and CKD population remain to be elucidated in prospective studies. A total of 1179 participants, who have tested for anti-HCV antibody, were enrolled and prospectively followed for 3 years. The risks associated with HCV infection, in terms of incidence of CKD, annual estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) changes and 50% decline of eGFR ...

BACKGROUND Both hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and adiponectin are critically involved in metabolism. The reversal and associations of altering adiponectin levels after sustained virological responses (SVRs) following direct-acting antivirals (DAA) in HCV-infected patients remained elusive. METHODS A joint study was conducted in a prospective cohort of 427 HCV-infected patients and a line of HCV core transgenic mice. RESULTS Of 427, 358 had completed a course of DAA therapy and 353 had SVRs. ...

The long-term outcome of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection among patients dually infected with HBV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) remains unclear. We aimed to investigate the long-term liver outcomes of HBV/HCV-coinfected patients after antiviral therapy. A total of 11,359 chronically HCV-infected patients with interferon-based therapy were registered in a nationwide Taiwanese Chronic Hepatitis C Cohort. A propensity score matched (PSM) cohort of HCV mono-infected (n = 7020) and HBV/HCV (n = 702) c...

Background and Aim Ropeginterferon alfa-2b (P1101) is a novel long-acting mono-PEGylated recombinant proline interferon (IFN) conjugated to a 40 kDa branched polyethylene glycol (PEG) chain at its N-terminus, allowing every-two-week injection. It received European Medicines Agency and Taiwan marketing authorization for the treatment of polycythemia vera in 2019 and 2020, respectively. This phase 2 study aimed to evaluate the pharmacokinetics, safety, and preliminary efficacy of ropeginterferon a...

Abstract null null Chronic hepatitis C, which is caused by the hepatitis C virus, represents a substantial health threat to humans and causes approximately 700,000 deaths each year worldwide. However, 30 years after the discovery of this virus in 1989, nearly perfect antiviral drugs that can clear up to 95% of this virus have been developed due to numerous biomedical research studies and cooperation among members of the hepatitis C community. Because of these advances, the WHO announced a goal t...

How hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and mixed cryoglobulinemia interactively affect complement levels remains elusive, and we aimed to elucidate it. A prospective cohort study of 678 consecutive chronic HCV-infected (CHC) patients was conducted. Of 678, 438 had completed a course of anti-HCV therapy and 362 had achieved a sustained virological response (SVR). The baseline and 24-week post-therapy variables including complement levels and mixed cryoglobulinemia status were surveyed. At baseline...

This study aimed to analyze the association between elevated gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT) and metabolic syndrome (MetS), hepatic steatosis, and fibrosis in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). From August 2013 to August 2018, a community-based study was conducted in the northeastern part of Taiwan. Patients who underwent abdominal ultrasonography (US) and had no history of alcoholic liver disease were included. According to a US examination showing fatty liver degree, 1...
