Carbocysteine is a mucoactive drug and is being used for both acute and chronic infectious airway diseases. Although carbocysteine can repair the damage of epithelial cells caused by exposure to various agents, the effects of this agent on allergic airway diseases such as asthma and eosinophilic bronchitis with an isolated chronic cough, in both of which epithelial damage may be characteristic, is not clear. We investigated the effects of carbocysteine on antigen-induced cough hypersensitivity t...

We examined the role of a cytosolic phospholipase A2 (cPLA2) in antigen-induced eosinophil infiltration of airways and in airway hyperresponsiveness to methacholine. Inhibition of cPLA2, or blockade of the platelet-activating factor (PAF) receptor, blocked antigen-induced airway hyperresponsiveness and suppressed eosinophil infiltration. Neither cyclooxygenase nor 5-lipoxygenase inhibition had either effect. We show here that, in antigen-sensitized guinea pigs, cPLA2 inhibition prevents both eos...

Abstract It has been shown that inhibitors of cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase III and IV have a bronchodilator effect. We compared the effects of a selective phosphodiesterase III inhibitor, 6-[4-(1-cyclohexyl-1 H -tetrazol-5-yl)butoxy]-3,4-dihydro-2(1 H )-quinolinone (cilostazol) and a phosphodiesterase I/IV inhibitor, 5-phenyl-3-(3-pyridil) methyl-3 H -imidazo[4,5- c ][1,8]naphthyridin-4(5 H )-one (KF-19514) on antigen- and histamine-induced bronchoconstriction in guinea pigs in vivo. Intr...

Summary Background We previously reported that inhaled acetaldehyde, a metabolite of ethanol atid a maiti factor in alcohol-induced asthma, causes bronchial hyper-responsiveness (BHR) in asthmatics. However, the mechanisms are unclear. Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate a role of a peptide leukotriene (LT) in acetaldehyde-induced BHR. Methods Effects of LT antagonists, ONO-1078 (O.l-l.Omg/kg) and ICI-198, 615 (0.03–0.3 mg/kg), on acetaldehyde-induced bronchoconstriction and B...

: Thirteen patients with hepatocellular carcinoma who underwent transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) were studied to evaluate the incidence of pulmonary embolism and methods for diagnosing this complication. Pulmonary perfusion scans and changes in indexes of coagulation and of fibrinolysis, and in the partial pressure of oxygen in arterial blood were evaluated as possible signs of pulmonary embolism complicating TAE. In 3 out of 13 patients (23%), perfusion lung scans showed perfusion defe...

: A 70-year-old woman complained of a dry mouth and swelling in the area of the left parotid gland for 6 years, and was admitted for evaluation of an abnormal shadow on chest X-ray film. She underwent a lip biopsy and a 99mTcO4- scintigram of the salivary gland, and Sjogren's syndrome was diagnosed. Histopathological examination of the percutaneous lung biopsy specimen showed pseudolymphoma, and examination of a specimen of the left parotid gland tumor showed myoepithelial sialadenitis. The pati...

: A 56-year-old male who had been followed for chronic hepatitis had cough and hemosputum. Chest X-ray and CT films showed an abnormal mass shadow in the right thorax. On suspicion of intrathoracic tumor, resection was performed. The tumor, which was on the diaphragm without invasion, was pedunculated and arose from the bottom surface of visceral pleura of the right lower lobe. From the microscopic findings and immunohistochemical staining, the tumor was diagnosed as localized fibrous mesothelio...
