Mango industry processing disposes 40-60% of this fruit as residues, such as peels and kernels. The exploration of bioproducts from these industrial rejects can reduce environmental impact besides of producing high value-added materials. In this scenario, carboxymethyl starch nanoparticles were produced from mango (Mangifera indica L.) kernel starch. These nanoparticles were then decorated with thermoresponsive chains of the amino terminated poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM-NH2), with the int...

Abstract The increasing demand for energy sources has led to oil field exploration under inhospitable conditions, where non-aqueous drilling fluids are commonly used due their physical and chemical stability. However, they exhibit a number of environmental constraints and the cuttings produced require expensive treatments before disposal. Aqueous drilling fluids are currently less thermally resistant and generally entail the use of chromium lignosulfonate as clay dispersant, which provides stabi...

In this study, we intended to evaluate the performance of olefin-based drilling fluids after addition of cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) derivatives. For this purpose, firstly, cellulose nanocrystals, produced from sulfuric acid hydrolysis of cotton fibers, were functionalized with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) chains via free radicals. The samples were then characterized via Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravi...

As fibras...

Herein is presented a simple and sensible method to determine organic pollutants in water, based on the utilization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) loaded in Polyacrylamide (PAAm)/starch hybrid hydrogels combined with surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy. The materials were characterized by swelling degree studies, UV-Visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). PAAm/starch hydrogels showed variable swelling capacity, according t...

The synthesis of new polymeric materials from the monomers is an arduous task, which does not always achieve the desired success. A very promising alternative that grows each year is the chemical modification of existing polymers. In this case, the polymer is one of the reagents of well-known properties and, through conventional chemical reactions, new functional groups can be inserted into the polymer chain, leading to a wide diversity of properties and applications for the new materials obtain...

Abstract A water-soluble carboxymethylchitosan (CMC) was prepared in water/isopropanol (2/8) medium, at 10 °C, and characterized by UV–vis, FT-IR and NMR techniques. Its performance as an environmentally friendly scale inhibitor in oil wells was evaluated under the physicochemical conditions of oil wells in northeast of Brazil, by using SEM, visual compatibility and dynamic tube blocking test. The synthesis conditions led to a degree of carboxymethylation of 0.45 and water-solubility in all pH r...
