Isolated leftward prolapse or deviation of the primary atrial septum is a rare CHD that can mimic abnormal pulmonary venous return at first sight. We present a case of a newborn infant, referred for surgical correction of totally anomalous pulmonary venous return into the right atrium, with the peri-operative finding of a leftward deviation of the superior margin of the primary atrial septum. The distinction with a dividing atrial shelf could not be confirmed with certainty. Fifty-three similar ...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES AKI is a common complication after pediatric cardiac surgery and has been associated with higher morbidity and mortality. We aimed to compare the efficacy of available pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic strategies to prevent AKI after pediatric cardiac surgery. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREMENTS PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Controlled Trials Register, and reference lists of relevant articles were searched for randomized controlled trials from inception un...

Cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (AKI) is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in both adults and children. This study aimed to identify clinical risk factors for AKI following cardiac surgery in the pediatric population. PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and reference lists of relevant articles were searched for studies published by August 2020. Studies were included if (1) the population consisted of pediatric patients (< 18 years old), (2) patients underwent cardiac s...

Background: Cardiac surgery-associated acute kidney injury (CS-AKI) is associated with increased morbidity and mortality in both adults and children. This study aimed to investigate the in-hospital outcomes of CS-AKI in the pediatric population. Methods: PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, and reference lists of relevant articles were searched for studies published by August 2020. Random-effects meta-analysis was performed, comparing in-hospital outcomes between patients who developed CS-AKI and tho...

Abstract Background Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of major congenital malformations. CHD outcomes have improved in the past 20 years, and research efforts in the field have increased exponentially. The purpose of this investigation is to identify the most influential recent publications related to CHD, and reveal their shared features using bibliometric analysis. Methods Journal articles related to CHD published between 2000-2020 were retrieved from the Scopus database. ...

Abstract Objective Although recent advances in pulmonary valve replacement have enabled excellent hemodynamics, infective endocarditis remains a serious complication, particularly for implanted bovine jugular vein (BJV) conduits. Methods We investigated contributions by platelets and plasma fibrinogen to endocarditis initiation on various grafts used for valve replacement. Thus, adherence of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and platelets to 5 graft tissues were studied quantitatively in perfusi...

AIMS Information on the prevalence, outcome and factors associated with heart failure in patients with adult congenital heart disease (CHD) (ACHD-HF) is lacking. We aimed at assessing the prevalence and outcome of ACHD-HF, the variables associated with ACHD-HF, and the differences between major anatomical/pathophysiological ACHD subgroups. METHODS AND RESULTS We included 3905 patients (age 35.4 ± 13.2 years) under active follow-up in our institution (last visit >2010). Outcome of ACHD-HF cases w...
