Although plastic straws account for a small fraction of urban residue, they are also found in marine and coastal waste, raising concerns in the community and resulting in policies to curb or ban improper disposal. These policies are still little documented and discussed in the scientific literature. This review article aims at surveying, categorizing and analyzing existing regulations on the American continent (North, Central and South America and the Caribbean). The regulations were analyzed in...

This review aimed to analyze plastic lumber manufacturing in Brazil, a country with a large amount of natural wood, and devise strategies to boost production. No studies were found on the development and application of plastic wood in a natural wood producing country that has been significantly affected by deforestation. Wood-plastic composite lumber was used in the present study. The methodology consisted of a bibliographic review, questionnaire, SWOT and TOWS analyses. The questionnaire was co...

The technology of anaerobic co-digestion to treat the excess biological sludge discharged from activated sludge systems in oil refineries was evaluated in bench scale experiments. Mixing food waste rich in fruits and vegetables with this sludge increased the reduction of volatile solids and biogas yield. An experimental design indicated that the best co-digestion condition was the use of waste activated sludge without previous dewatering (3.5% total solids) and food waste in an 80:20 ratio (% v/...

Acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene (ABS) copolymer and high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) are the plastics most commonly found in waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), although properties generally decline with recycling. Technical studies are important in assessing the properties of recycled plastics and obtaining better evidence of their return or not to the same production cycle, through a study of their impacts and life cycle assessment (LCA). This article aimed at a literature search f...

This study aimed to evaluate recycling networks for poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) packaging and propose a network structure for sharing recycling routes between different production units, using the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan region as a case study. A descriptive design was used and field research conducted to gather data on the recycling process. Participants were production units, classified as distributors, distribution recyclers, intermediate recyclers, and molding recyclers. A georefe...

Abstract This article presents a literature review of solid waste management on cruise ships using a bibliographic search of the main databases. Articles that discuss waste management were spread over different research areas, demonstrating that the topic is cross-sectional and interconnected, involving social, economic and political considerations. The text is organized into four topics: generation, treatment, disposal and impacts. Recent years have seen increasing interest in cruise ship waste...

The aim of the study was to determine the relation between the composition of university recyclable material collected (plastic, paper, metal and glass), education-related factors such as the academic calendar and work stoppages, and regional factors such as climate, regional economy and composition of the urban waste collected over an 8-year period. The study was conducted based on the composition of recyclable dry solid wastes at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, quantified after their...
