An 84-year-old man was referred to our out-patient clinic with an elongated mass localized to the retrosternal area that was incidentally identified by computed tomography. On 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography, this lesion showed intense tracer uptake. Thus, a surgical biopsy under thoracoscopy was performed. Histological examination revealed dense fibrous tissue associated with inflammatory cell infiltration. The immunoglobulin (Ig) G4/IgG plasma cell ratio was over 90%. Serum...

A 65-year-old woman presented with mycosis fungoides and an anterior mediastinal tumor. Stage Ⅱa mycosis fungoides was treated with bath psoralen plus ultraviolet A, topical corticosteroids, and oral bexarotene. One month later, a surgical resection was performed for the anterior mediastinal tumor, which was a stage Ⅱ thymoma with membrane invasion. Furthermore, adjuvant radiotherapy was performed for anterior mediastinum. The mycosis fungoides lesion exacerbated after 3 months;thus, chemotherap...

A 47-year-old man with pulmonary hyalinizing granuloma is herein presented. The patient, whose chief complaint was a mild cough, was found by chest radiograph to have multiple bilateral nodules. Subsequent high-resolution computed tomography demonstrated multiple slightly irregular nodules, perinodular ground-glass opacity, peribronchovascular interstitial thickening, and cysts. A mild enlargement of systemic lymph nodes was also noted. Laboratory tests disclosed a slight elevation in the C-reac...

Objective Robotic telemanipulation systems have been introduced recently to enhance the surgeon's dexterity and visualization in endoscopic surgery and thus facilitate refined dissection, suturing, and knot tying. This study examined the technical feasibility of performing safe and efficient robot-assisted, hand-sewn endoscopic airway reconstruction in a rabbit model. Methods A total of 18 tracheal anastomoses were performed in rabbits, with 6 anastomoses performed endoscopically using the da Vi...

There are still difficulties in determining the risk of recurrence to decide whether to perform selective adjuvant treatment for stage I non-small cell lung cancer. This study reviewed 122 stage I patients who underwent curative surgery to assess the usefulness of an angiogenesis-associated factor as a predictor of recurrence. By immunohistochemical examination, we collected information about tumor-induced vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A and -C expression at the primary site. During ...

Introduction The operator performing minimally invasive surgery is prevented from seeing the whole field with both eyes by the restricted small thoracotomy incision. To overcome this problem, we developed mirror glasses.

We report a valuable case in which a spontaneous intercostal arterial aneurysmal rupture associated with neurofibromatosis type 1, and a re-rupture after embolization of the aneurysm were successfully treated by endovascular embolization without surgery. Our case calls for attention as it indicates that recurrent aneurysmal rupture can occur even after an embolization or surgery. It is important to carefully observe the course of the patient by follow-up computed tomography (CT) or angiography i...
