AbstractIntroduction: Use of a mechanical arm to hold the laparoscopic camera has many advantages. FreeHand® (FreeHand Ltd, Guildford, United Kingdom) is a robotic camera holder which uses head movement and infrared technology. This trial assessed the usefulness of FreeHand® in laparoscopic appendicectomy.Material and methods: This was a single center prospective cohort study on patients undergoing emergency laparoscopic appendicectomy using FreeHand®. Patient demographics, operative details, co...

BACKGROUND:A certain proportion of patients with locally advanced rectal cancer experience complete response after undergoing neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy. These patients might be suitable for a conservative “watch and wait” approach, avoiding high-morbidity surgery. Texture analysis is a new modal

Background The diagnostic accuracy of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in restaging locally advanced rectal cancers (LARC) after neoadjuvant chemo-radio therapy (NCRT) has been under recent scrutiny. There is limited data on the accuracy of MRI and its timing in assessing tumor regression grade (TRG) and in identifying patients with complete response (CR). NCRT seems to cause tissue inflammation and oedema which renders reading the scans difficult for radiologist.

INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to identify the rate of incisional hernia formation following ileostomy reversal in patients who underwent anterior resection for colorectal cancer. In addition, we aimed to ascertain risk factors for the development of reversal-site incisional hernias and to record the characteristics of the resultant hernias. MATERIALS AND METHODS Using a prospectively compiled database of colorectal cancer patients who were treated with anterior resection, we identified ...

Aim The study aimed to investigate whether textural features of rectal cancer on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can predict long term survival in patients treated with long-course chemoradiotherapy. Method Textural analysis (TA) using a filtration-histogram technique of T2-weighted pre- and six-week post chemoradiotherapy MRI was undertaken using TexRAD, a proprietary software algorithm. Regions of interest enclosing the largest cross-sectional area of the tumour were manually delineated on th...

Abstract Introduction Laparoscopic surgery requires a different and sometimes more complex skill set than does open surgery. Shortened working hours, less training times, and patient safety issues necessitates that these skills need to be acquired outside the operating room. Virtual reality simulation in laparoscopic surgery is a growing field, and many studies have been published to determine its effectiveness. Aims This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to evaluate virtual reality simul...

IntroductionIncisional hernia is a common complication of laparoscopic colorectal surgery. Extraction site may influence the rate of incisional hernias. Major risk factors for the development of incisional hernias include age, diabetes, obesity and smoking status. In this study, we investigated the effect of specimen extraction site on incisional hernia rate. MethodsTwo cohorts of patients who underwent laparoscopic colorectal resections in a single centre in 2005 (n=85) and 2009 (n=139) were st...
